Moston in Sandbach, Cheshire and surrounding area

My great-grandfather was born Thomas Moston in Sandbach, Cheshire in 1848, and appears under this surname in the 1851 Census. His father is listed as Randall Moston (age 32), and in Sandbach district there were also Mary Moston (30), William Moston (21) and James Moston (70). In 1861, the family had moved to nearby Middlewich and consisted of Randles (sic) Mostyn (41), Martha Mostyn(35) and Thomas Mostyn (12). I presume that Thomas's schoolteachers used the spelling Mostyn, and this has certainly stuck in my family. However, in 1871, Randle(!) Moston had returned to Sandbach and reverted to the original spelling of his name. Thomas had by then moved to Liverpool, but Randle was living with Martha and four younger children: Elizabeth, Susannah, Allen and Randle jnr. Randle jnr appears to have been living in Smallwood Entire parish and working as a Waggoner on a farm. |
