Just had one last look at this 1871 puzzle.

I think that the GR census entry means the Civil Parish is Stepney and the town is Ratcliff but still not found a possible match.

No proof just educated guess and seeing what that brings up based on what I know. It is funny that there is an entry in the 71 index for a William but no detail. Is that unusual? or was that the norm.
Thank you for being patient with me

Have you got any proof that he was alive after the 1841 census.

I have already mentioned that there is no matching entry on Ancestry in 1871 for Stepney, Ratcliff. Actually that is not a civil parish or registration district so no idea where GR got that from.

he does not appear in 81 and 91 census. I think he must have died before 81. Concrete facts are that he was 36 in 1871 and his brother was living in the stepney/mile end area. There is an entry on the 71 for a william button living in stepney ratcliff. Can you see if that entry shows his birth essex
thanks

1871 no match at all on Ancestry for the details from GR search results.

The only entry that I can see on Ancestry is on the 1841 census.

Why not try to find this person in 1881? It's free.......and if you find him, you will have some concrete facts on which to base searches in other years..............
