Surname Origin

The surname probably evolved from Cedd(7th Century)>Chide>Kide(1066)>Kidd(and variants), from Christian baptism of families of Romanized Britons and Anglo-Saxon invaders; please see
http://www.surnamedb.com/surname.aspx?name=Kidd
Cedd was one of 4 monk-priests trained by Aidan of Lindisfarne, sent out to convert and baptise the English people into Celtic Christianity.

I would further recommend all those interested in the deep ancestry of their surname, to enlist at www.familytreedna.com and contribute lineage Y-DNA (male mouth swab) for analysis at 37-marker (or greater) level.

1881 population density distributions establish more recent origins from Yorkshire, Eastern Scotland and Ireland and these distributions, in turn, partly derive from
(1) Early Pilgrimage (pre-Norman conquest) to sites associated with Cedd i.e Mercia, Anglia and Essex
(2) Migration of families (post-Norman conquest) from the Borders area, where allegiances moved to either Malcolm/Margaret of Scotland or the Norman Kings of England
(3) 'Encouraged/enforced dispersal' of Borders families during the reign of William of Orange, to Ireland, Scotland and England.
