Find Ancestors

I am not as certain about the 1881 census as the 1901.
This is due to being able to follow through on the marriage of Margaret Ellen.

Would it be possible to pick an alternative Bowling family if you consider the 1881 suspect. The alternative you suggest does not consist of the right names, there would need to be the one child Margaret Ellen, as she is recorded as 22 in the 1901 census, so would be around in 1881, unless she was at grannys.

I had concentrated on the names, and taken my eye off the ball with the occupations. It is necessary to keep cross referencing isnt it!!

Caroline Esther Bowling (1886 AMJ Toxteth Park) I think is the sister of Margaret Ellen (1878 AMJ Preston)

Father, Thomas Bowling, was born in Preston, and moved to Liverpool.
Margaret Ellen appears to be the only child born in Preston.
Elizabeth, Caroline, Margaret and Henry all born in Liverpool.
I dont think they are children of Hugh Thomas Bowling, there seems to be two very similar families.
Hugh Thomas appears to come from Chorley.
I would love to be wrong on this one, as it is really perplexing.

The Thomas you posted for 1881 looks more likely to be this one in 1901...........his occupation is the same in both years (Engine Driver Cotton Mill)

Thank you for the info around Hugh Thomas.
I have previously tracked his census records through and not all the children tie up.

I have linked through on Margaret Ellen Bowling (AMJ 1878 ) who I am almost sure is the daughter of Thomas Bowling, to a marriage with a Robert Walls (AMJ 1903 West Derby) and down a generation to a definate validated child, Nellie Walls (3.1.1914) Liverpool who died in 2000.

This leaves me to think that it must be Thomas, (not Hugh Thomas),

If I could find the 1891 census for Thomas it would really help to sort out exactly who Margaret Ellen belongs to, but I think it is a Thomas Bowling.

Hope this sounds logical, but I have been trying to crack this one for the past few days.

In the 1881 census he was married to an Elizabeth from Weeton Lancs.
They have a Margaret E (dght) the right age. Still Living in Preston.

There is a similar family of Hugh Thomas Bowling who links through the census records mainly in Toxteth Park with some similar named children.
He comes from Chorley. However I am almost sure it is another distinct family as I cannot find a blood link.

I simply cannot find Thomas and his family anywhere in 1891. All children should be around as they were all over 10 years of age in 1901.

Really puzzling is this one.

Thomas is a widow by the 1901 census. I have not yet found where Ellizabeth died, or whether thomas married again or not. Possible as there is a 20 year gap.

I have sent for some birth cert of two daughters to see if they throw up the same mothers. (Eldest and youngest)

Thanks for the information, I wonder if you could have a quick look and see if you can find the family in 1891.
I have tried through every family member, and cannot come up with anything.
I have experienced names being mis scribed both in the census and then copying onto web accessible records, but have usually got round this by various means. This family is just not coming up in 1891.
I would be grateful if you could find something I have missed.

I have 1901 census record for Thomas Bowling (59) living at 3 Walpole Street West Derby. He is recorded as widower. Living with three daughters, Elizabeth (17) Margaret (22) Caroline E (15) and son Henry (13)
Thomas is stated to have been born in Preston, and all the children in Liverpool.
I cannot trace this family in the 1891 census records.
Can anyone help me please.
