Maria Fitting, London, 1870's to 1880's HELP NEED

Fiona Report 13 Oct 2007 18:26

Please, please, please, if anybody has information regarding any families with a young woman called Maria Fitting in London in the 1870's to 1880's will they reply to my query on this message board.
Maria registered the birth of her son William Caleb Batchelor in September 1880 in Kensington, London.
She stated on his birth certificate that she was Maria Batchelor , formerly Fitting.
I can find no record of her existence as Maria Fitting, prior to her marriage, in any of the censuses going back as far as 1841. (Or any record of her birth.)
I have spent two years searching for her without success. Maria was my Great Great Grandmother and unless someone can give me some help my research into the London side of my family has hit a brick wall! I keep wondering if she was born abroad and even whether she had changed part of her surname to make it sound more English. I know that Fittinghoff and Von Fittinghoff and the variation Viettinghoff are European surnames. I have no one left on the Batchelor side of my family who has any knowledge about her.
My only other idea was that perhaps she came from Ireland.
If anyone reading this has any information about families with the surname "Fitting" would they put what they know on this message board, even if it is general information on the origin of the surname.
With thanks to all who contribute in any way to my search,
from Fiona.
