~Mama*HOTLIPS* Rambo~ Report 13 Oct 2007 00:05

Hi

I think I have found my great grandparents and family (prior to my grandad being born) my dad said my grandad had a brother who drowned aged about 18 after checking the death index I have found the name that is listed on the 1901 census and he died in 1910 aged 19.

My question is...
Would my library or local records office have any info or paper write up ref the tragedy?

If not where would I find any info other than the death cert.

Regards
Catherine

If your local Records Office covers the area where this person died, then yes, they probably will have the local papers that would have covered it. Maybe the library will have them too, depends how big the library is.

Contact them and see what they hold before visiting, if you go there you may well find an article in the local paper.

I would imagine that the reference library which is closest to the place of death would hold back copies of local newspapers from the time on microfilm.

There would almost certainly be a write up of the tragedy, but I think it would be best to get the death certificate first as this would give you the exaxt date of death which would make it easier to find a report in the newspaper. I would think it would be reported on either the same day or very soon afterwards.

I have recently had the need to contact the local history society at the library. I looked at first on the net for the local authority in that area and the web page led me to details of what the main library in the area held and gave contact web address.

HAPPY HUNTING !
