Is anyone out there an expert of Prison records.

Recently I found a family member on the 1871 census was in prison at that time.

I would like to find out why he was there and for how long.

Where do I start ?

Thanks

Have you tried "googling" for prison records for the name of the prison for a start? Some prison records survive and can be found in record offices.

Ken I went to the local records office, went through the court records which are really detailed, but i never found anything. Also i was told by the staff he may not have committed the crime in the place he served his sentence

Try putting his name in a2a Ken.
I did that after finding one of my relatives in gaol in 1861. I didn't manage to get the prison records but I did find the bill of costs which also gave me the date and crime and then was able to get newspaper clippings.

I found my 'wayward' female relative in Jail on the 1871 Census and curiosity got the better of me.
I went to Oxford Records Office and checked the Assizes records for that time frame and found her 'offence', bless her 1 Yr for stealing a hankie..
