Just to say that I have come across instances in the census records of my own family also from the Leeds area where the ages have been 'muddled'. One example is written as 11 months where I know from all my records that the person in question was 11 years old at the time. Another and much more annoying transcription error which I was only able to catch by looking up another of the children who had been living with a maternal grandparent was Orange transcribed as Grange.

Certainly seems to be the same person, weird mistake to make though, there must be a better explanation - I'll keep mulling it over!

Hi Andy,

I've just looked at both images from 1851 and 1861. Ann Wilson from 1851 and Wilson from 1861.......hmmm. Could they be the same person, just wrong info on one of the census records?

great, thank you - looking at what Pamela found above from 1851 an Ann Wilson is mentioned, which is what made me wonder what his gender was.

It has to be the right family as the names tie in, just Mary Ann's dob is wrong. I think it should have read 9 months on the 1851 and the enumerator forgot to record that important bit.

Edward is a widower and Mary Ann, Sarah and Wilson (son) are all his children.

Deb, you're a star!

Are the relationships of each member shown please? or is that not flagged on the 1861?

Also, is Wilson shown as a male or female?

Thanks for your help,

Andy

I'm guessing that the name must have been mis-transcribed. Perhaps she is on the census as Cockram or cockeram or something similar.

Thanks Pamela,

I was hoping to disprove this but Mary Ann was probably being economical with the truth at her wedding saying she was born in 1850!

Is there a Mary Ann on the 1861 born abt 1840?

Thanks,
Andy

Andy,

I can only see one Mary Cockerham with father Edward but birthplace is different. Sorry, but I can't make out Edwards occupation as scan is faded.
