Can anyone find anything on Elijah Richmond. As shown in the1851 census for reference. All his siblings born in Burnham too.

I can't find Elijah or James (Jas) on any subsequent census, nor on the death index.

Hi Diane, I've tried looking for Elijah for you - could only see him on 1841 & 1851 before I got chucked off ancestry. Haven't been able to get back on since. If I'm around tomorrow I'll have another look. if not, good luck!

Seeing as they are the eldest children, perhaps they were born before Sarah and George married and have different surnames.

This could be George and Sarah's marriage registration

Marriages Jun 1841 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BALLS Joseph Maldon 12 219
BOCKING Joseph Maldon 12 219
BRAND Mary Maldon 12 219
>>>>CHITTOCK Sarah Maldon 12 219
MATTHEWS Richard Maldon 12 219
>>>>Richmond George Maldon 12 219
SPOONER Martha Maldon 12 219
WITNEY Charlotte Maldon 12 219

So Elijah born ca 1834, Jas born ca 1836 and Sarah b. ca 1839 all pre-date this marriage.

Question is ..................... are they George's with a previous wife OR Sarah's??

I wonder if they changed their names???????

I've tried looking for eli* born 1835 +/- 5 years, born Burnham Essex, and then for Richmond, born 1835 +/- 10 years, born Burnham Essex .... nada!!

There is a James Richmond b. ca 1829 Burnham suddenly appears on the 1861 Census as Master of a vessel, with boy seaman George Richmond age 8, born Jersey, Channel Islands.

There is also a Sarah A Richmond, Head, b. ca 1829, Burnham, living in the Channel Islands in 1871 (1871 Channel Islands Census), Married, Mariner's Wife.

any connection?????????

Thanks for trying, everybody.

George Richmond and Sarah (nee Beckwith) were married in 1828, so you would expect them to be Elijah and James Richmond.

I haven't got middle names for either of them, so I don't know if perhaps they went by middle names.

Likewise, I've searched on all men born Burnham and can't find anything very helpful!

I haven't got the 2 in the channel islands, yet, but I am sure they will be cousins or something somewhere.

Curiouser and curiouser...

Presumably if they had died at sea, there should still be a record of death? Although perhaps not if the bodies were never recovered?

Tracy...

Still no Elijah though... :(

OMG! I wouldn't have thought of looking in the Canadian census..... my haystack to find my needles in has just got bigger!!!

Many thanks!

Does anyone have access to findmypast?

There is a GRO Marine Deaths Indexes 1837-1846-1965, if its a simple search engine format, could someone look up Elijah? If its not, then please don't spend time trawling through indexes as its a long shot anyway!

Tracy,

I've just gone to look for myself, and realised my ancestry sub isn't global! Is there anything on him on the immigration lists that might give any more information?

Thanks so much for your help!!
