My grandfather was John Ernest Cassidy born 1856 or 1857 in Galway, Ireland. In 1869 to 1871, he moved, with his father, also John, older brother, Michael, and possibly sister, Catherine, or Kathleen, to London. The latter may have gone directly to Australia. The boys' mother was called Kathleen or Catherine, was dead at this time and there was a stepmother, called Susan Mead (widow of William Mead) and they had a daughter, Susan, about the same age as John. The stepmother may have been with the family when they moved from Ireland to London. They settled first at Bethnal Green and then Woolwich. Michael was called Guss in the family, and served in the British Army for over 20 years. Confusingly, he gave his name as John Cassidy and his brother as his next of kin, at an address we know was correct. I have a copy of his Army records. Is there anybody out there who may be connected to these people? I have all the Cassidy descendants, but would love to go back a bit further. |
