Hello, sorry if this is a silly question
I was just wondering... were all babies baptised around 1823?

Short answer - No.

Some parents didn't bother, others waited until they had a batch of kids and got them all done together too.

Is there a chance that some weren't baptised at all. I have a chap who is in the census and I have checked all the baptisms for that county and neighbouring county but nothing comes up for him

You may also find instances where the family appear to have used different churches within the same town or village.

At least with a birth c1823 you should get the name of his father from his marriage certificate.

When you say that you have checked ALL the baptisms for a county do you mean that you have used an online source eg IGI or have you trawled through every parish record for the whole of a county at the records office?

I have the father from the marriage cert and have had checkes on all baptisms with a father of that name, got a couple of matches for the father in the right area with children but not the one I am looking for. Stargazer has also checked different area for me and couldnt find him. I have come to the conclusion that maybe he wasn't baptised but wasn't sure if that sort of thing happened
Thanks for your advice Pete

I have the baptism cds for Bristol. The chap was born abt 1822/23. In the census it conflicts areas as born in Henbury, St George and Gloucestershire. Stargazer checked Glos as she has those and also Bristol.
I have checked 1813-1837 and also back further just incase 1754-1812. No sign of him. He married in 1840 in Bedminster, Bristol. Can find marriage and another GR member has marriage cert with father on but we cant find him anywhere.

How inconsiderate of him to marry before the 1841 census and not still be living at home with mum and dad!

If it is any consolation I have been trying for over 10 years to locate the roots of my 3x g grandfather. He married in 1836 (so no father's name on a marriage cert for me!) and died before the 1841 census.

Just one other thought. Have you cross-checked the list of parishes included on the CD with GENUKI pages for Gloucestershire in case there are some churches not held in the CD database?

How old was he at his time of marriage? If he was under 21 he should have had consent and this may be documented in the relevant parish records - banns etc.

Thanks Pete, he was 20 when he married. Knowing my luck he probably wasn't baptised or they just forgot to get him done! lol Its so frustrating!
I'll take your advice.
Thanks very much
