Hi Mark

Actually you should alter the HEADING to add Sorted to that, then no-one will open the thread!

The way you have done it, one has to read all the way through all the postings to the very last one to find out everything is now A-OK!

To alter the heading, click on Edit in your very first posting, ie the one you did when you first started the thread.

Enjoy the hunting!!

Sylvia.

Hi Claire, jim, sylvia and Portland Rose.

Sincere apologies to you all. I have only just worked out how to relocate threads by me, which have sunk to the depths of the forum. I'd also half-forgotten about it because I said "I'm okay for now" and did not expect any further replies.

I have since read that I should write SORTED at the bottom, to let people know I'm done.

Big thanks to sylvia for going to the trouble of writing all that useful advice even though, since opening this thread, I had learned much of that from reading other threads.

I don't begrudge GR the money I have spent so far, (not much, 1/8th of an Ancestry sub) at all. In fact I dread the thought that they'd go bust if no-one used their pay-services every so often and I'd hate to have my tree (and its hotmatches from other people's efforts) go down the pan.

@ Jim in S'oton
I hadn't allowed six weeks grace, as it happens.
Thanks for those additional finds.
I am treating "Arthur H Cherry" as a false lead, for the time being but the data goes in my notes, just in case. Certificates are on order and I will have the right man by this time next week. A fresh thread will be started for that.

@ Rose.
I don't know the answer to that. I jumped the gun and should have properly established the name before I started.

Where's the right queue for 'noob' badges? ; - )

Mark,

PLEASE do not buy credits on here!!!

You can find the information cheaper (often free!) and easier elsewhere.

Most of us on here never go near the "buy" parts of GR. It's far too expensive.

In fact, I don't even update my tree on here any more.

This site is useful principally because of the people who give help ....... all are members who are doing it for the love of the hunt and the wish to help people.

You should:-

Buy a sub to ancestry for all censuses and other documentation.

Go to www.freebmd.org.uk for all births marriages and deaths (bmds) since September 1837 to about 1920 or 1925.

Use ancestry to look at the Complete Index of bmds from September 1837 to 2005 or 2006 ...... you have to search that quarter by quarter year by year, then repeat for the other party if you're looking for a marriage.

OR look for the county bmd (eg, Lancashire bmd). Google to find your county.

You can use Family History Online, a pay per view site, but has some good old stuff.

The Mormon site is free and very useful ............especially the International Genealogical Index (click on Advance Search to find it). BUT remember that the information on there are either "extracted records" or "submitted records".

"Extracted" means that the information ahs been taken from the actual parish record, and can be trusted as much as any other transcribed material on any site ................... should be backed up by documentation such as bmd certificates.

"Submitted" means that the information has been submitted, most often by a church member, and quite frankly this information is the least trustworthy of any! If in doubt, make it up, seems to be the catchword for some of the submitters, I'm sorry to say! You CAN use this information as a guideline, but be very very careful.

British Origins can be useful, it's subscription site. www.britishorigins.com

Rootsweb can be useful .......... www.rootsweb.com

Then you can think about a2a, or archive to archive, a site where you may be able to find access to documents held at a number of archives arounf the uk. It's free. www.a2a.org.uk

AND you can always ask people on here to find information for you. But if you do that, do stay around for at least a little while ....................... there are people on site almost 24 hours a day and you will be surpised how fast you get an answer, or may be they need a question answered before they can search for you.

Hi Reggie,

Thanks for reply.

I forgot to mention that I'm new to this lark, so any abbreviations need to be in longhand; jargon explained and every website anyone mentions is going to be something I'm unfamiliar with, and will need a good Google keyword to locate.

The 'oblique approach' did get me to the index page I required, in the end, so I am okay for now. I am waiting on certs anyway (postal strike and all), so I might as well explore these alternative sites and see what's on offer, in the meantime.

Waste of time notifying GR....they don't do the transcriptions............all they do is take the money for you to view what other sites have transcribed.........

Incidentally, I think you'll find that 1884 is on freebmd.............

...Births Apr-May-June 1884

Affecting surnames CHE? to CHESTERS Frank (- 1)

Input search terms
Forename: Arthur
Surname: Cherry
YOB : 1884 +/- 0 yrs

in the results

1884 Apr-May-Jun CHEETERS F CHITTENDEN W

Paid 1 credit to view

Line 1
CHESTERS, Frank;
(11 other CHESTERS)
CHESTERTON (4 off)
CHESTNEY
(ends with the aforementioned Chittenden)

If the sequence of names wasn't enough of a giveaway...
Viewed at 800% zoom in Adobe Viewer (file was saved to disk), the 4th letter can be clearly distinguished as an 'S'

Evidently the scans were transcribed by software.

For affected names: until this is repaired, you will have to adopt an oblique approach. A search on surname CHEDWORTH should avoid another 'hit' on CHEETERS. With luck the name you want will be somewhere on that page.

Genes Support Team has been notified separately.

regards,

Mark

EDIT: Support Team acknowledged the existence of the error and repairs were underway, as at 11th Oct 2007.
