Mark_of_Four_(Counties) Report 9 Oct 2007 22:49

Hi all, my first post on GR and I'm still at noob level for this lark (but I have years of forum experience from elsewhere and thus no excuses..).

I received a useful tip, to use the navigate buttons on the image viewer to download the pages either side of the one you paid credits to get.

I tried it but the button for the direction I want to go is greyed out. On the technical side, what am I doing wrong?

I have the following (allow for clumsy transcription on my part)
CENSUS 1891
Column headers as follows: -
Civil Parish: South Stoneham
Municipal Borough: Southampton
Municipal Ward: (indistict) Portswood
Urban Sanitary District: Southampton
(more Southampton references)
Ecclesiastical District: Christ Church

Above Eccl'l Dist column Page 81 (black blob on top of a loop but not quite the right shape to be a 3).

Large number, Top right, outside of the black outline.... 111

Line 1 (Indistinct Road name)
Lonslanes M Cherry Daur S 17 East Indies Seack'rteRanfaull
Line 2
Arthur H Do Son S 6 Hants Southampton
Line 3
Fanny Do Sister.Visitor S 49 Ireland NewRoss
Lines 4 to 6 (non-family)
Next household.

If anyone happens to have a copy of "page 80" of this roll, or can access it without expending their own credits at all, I would appreciate details of the Head, spouse and other offspring.

I can't see any way of scoring a GR search hit on "page 80" as there is no way of knowing what the preceding neighbours names were.

I have a feeling that this family is a false lead but am unable to prove it without knowing who the father and mother are.

Thanks, in advance

Mark

Do not buy credits from GR for census images as they are a waste of money.. I presume that as you have only paid for one image the next or previous one would not appear.

Hi Glitter Baby.

I had encountered William, Army Surgeon via some other search strategy but couldn't conclusively prove that Arthur H links to him without seeing the census for myself and, for my pains, I end up with a split page for my 50p. [gesture deleted] *

As you can see, I fully empathise with your standpoint. You can guess my other gripes, which is good, as I don't have to type them out.

So, I am dying to know. Where did you get that data from, so quickly, and is it free to use?

(If URL's are banned, just drop me a keyword that will find it via Google).

It's off topic for this forum but I've ordered a cert to get a name, to get another cert, to get the name that will allow me to cross the above family off. It's the right geographical area (give or take 20 miles) which is tenuous enough and we have no family knowledge of links to Ireland.

From minimal forum useage I've already gleaned that, once you track back to 19th c. Ireland, you more or less grind to a halt, or are forced to go traipseing.

Many thanks to you, for going to this amount of trouble on what is, essentially, a negative lead, for me.

If this forum did coloured text, I'd be writing to you in green right now.

However, I am neither qualified as an auditor, nor that other thing which people mysteriously associate with things written in green ink...

Joking aside...

do you think it would be a good strategy to progress as far as one can until *really* stuck and then start up the Ancestry sub or is it better to cut to the chase and do it asap, even when no difficulties have presented themselves yet?

Mark

(I promise: no ancestor queries until I get my certs)

Mark,

I have had a sub to ancestry for about 4 years ................... and think it is the best value for maoney.

I quite honestly do not see how anyone can do research on their families without access to ancestry!

It may seem a lot of money ....... but you will in fact pay more per view and have to go to several different sites to see even half of what is available on ancestry.

All you have to remember, is that your ancestors couldn't spell, the census takers couldn't spell, the transcribers have difficulty understanding copperplate handwriting, and so you have to get creative in your searches!

To sum up .................... I would subscribe earlier rather than later! It will in fact save you money and much frustration!!

Hi Sylvia,

you've long since convinced me... I just have to work out how to convince my sponsor without it leaving me feeling like I've imposed on them.
