2 things...

I have a Charles Richmond born approx 1823 in Poland, living in Spitalfields in the 1861/71/1881 census.... however, beside the record on 1881 on ancestry it says "B S Poland" Does anyone know what B S means?
Secondly... its not a very Polish name, does anyone have any ideas how I go about finding his parents? I am thinking he was born there but of english descent?

B. S. stands for British Subject.

Hi

The B S could be British Subject? His family continues on the following page and his wife also born Poland has a BS as well. It could be that they changed surnames when they moved countries.

There is another entry on the same page for someone born in Russia and thats followed by an F - (for foreigner?).

I can see that his wife was Caroline but cannot trace the marriage of Charles Richmond to Caroline in England/Wales from 1841-1865. This presupposes that if they were married then it was before they came to this country. However I can see that Nancy and two brothers were born here - Nancy 1861 2nd quarter Whitechapel 1c 351. If you get the birth certificate of, say, Nancy, you will find the maiden name of Caroline ... and then determine whether she had an English name.
IF you cannot trace the marriage on Ancestry ( I have checked already on FindMyPast - then maybe a trip to the FRC in Islington will reward you as they have BMD records of BS who worked abroad and the marriage, at least, should be recorded there.
Incidentally I did find your Charles and Caroline on the 1871 and 81 census - but not on the 1861 ?? it also appears that Henry may have been born Shoreditch or nearby. I think Nancy is your lead. - though the FRC visit may be a MUST.
