I'm trying to find out more about my great-grandfather Thomas Burgess (born around 1850). He is listed as a Bargeman on my grandfather's (Joseph William Burgess) marriage certificate. My grandfather was born in Hemel Hempstead in 1875, but I can find no mention of Thomas Burgess in any census. I'm not even sure where he was born, since he might have lived on the Barges. Anyone any ideas where I might start looking as I've reached a dead end?

HI LYNDA, Found a possible entry on the 1881 census reference rg11 piece no.1401 folio 8 page 9.
the address is dickinsons yard, Ware, Hertfordshire.
thomas burgess,33 boatman,born stanstead abbots...eleanor jane burgess,30, born ware...thomas,11...george benjamin,9...florence ellen,7...jos william,5...lillian,4...benjamin inv(?),1.

The jos william is actually transcribed as josn william,& his birthplace shown as Sawbridgeworth (which is in the bishop's stortford registration district) but he would appear to be a possible joseph!
regards john.
