On checking a birth entry for a friend, I came across one which was modified by hand. The typewritten page number was scored through and replaced by by a written number in the format 1234/5.
Can anyone enlighten me on this point?
Regards,
Roy G.

Hi Roy, may not be of help here but the incidents where I have seen this before shows the year and quarter to be checked where the ammendment had occurred.eg 1926/S. therefore look in sept quarter of 1926

Thanks Joan,
In this case the number is 7915/5 which is why I'm stumped for the time being.
Thanks anyway and regards,
Roy

Roy, also willing to look for you, Joan

Is it clearly written ?

I too have come across this - the reasons in my case, not necessary yours, were:

The parents weren’t married at the time and then registered the birth after the marriage.

The child was adopted.

Generally, it indicates a change to the original entry in some way.

Thanks Patricia.
Barry and Joan,
the details moderately recent (60's) are as follows:
Sally Ann Gummer born 8 May 1968 in Bristol.
Ref Vol 7B Page 446 modified to 7915/5.

Mother's maiden name: Margaret Ann Bryant. She married Michael S. V. Gummerin Bristol Q2 1964.Married again in 1976.

There is a bit of a family mystery in that Sally was never told of her father whose name did not appear on her birth certificate. Her grandmother and mother would never discuss her father (if he was that). She is now trying to find out the story.
I've advised her to visit the Bristol Register Office to make enquiries on her own behalf. In the meantime, I've posted this request for help.
Thanks for your response so far. Should I get to the bottom of it, I will post the results.
Regards, Roy

This looks more like an adoption to me rather than a re-registration. Re-registration usually has an amendment like that described in earlier replies where the year and month to look at is written at the bottom of the page.

UPDATE - Sorry, ignore what I've just said. I've just looked at the birth reference for a relative who was born in the sixties, whose birth I know was re-registered because the person her mother was married to at the time was not the child's biological father. After her mother divorced and then married the real father, the birth was re-registered and the amendment to her birth is similar to the one you are looking at, so it seems that her birth has been re-registered at a later date. In my case I know the new re-registered name of my relative so I can check the index.

Do you know the new married name of Sally's mother? If you do you could look under that name in the same qtr. and year as the first birth registration. I can't find a marriage in 1976 for a Margaret Ann Gummer.

Hi Kath,
Given the total lack of information given to Sally Ann, I'm sure your comments on re-registration apply. She is attempting to acquire the modified certificate today.
Her mother was re-married to a Dave (David?) Bartlett, possibly in Bristol also.I couldn't find a marriage entry for him for 1975-1977 but I will ask for confirmation of the date.
Thank you for your input. I'll let you know the outcome.
Regards,Roy
