Hi Cathy,

It's not easy going back past the 1841 census information - you will need to look at the parish records, and remember that ages given in the 1841 census are often rounded to the nearest 5 years.

I found information through putting my tree on this site, from the IGI, and searching names and locations on Google, Rootsweb and any other sites I came across. This worked wonders for me as much of the information I now have came from other people who were researching other branches of the family.

There is a good book called "Ancestral Trails" by Mark Herber. The revised edition has only just come out and it gives details of what records are available and how to check them out. It is extremely comprehensive.

Also, is there a family history society for the area you are researching? They can be very useful sources of information.

Free BMD starts in the 3rd quarter of 1837

I believe 1841 is the earliest census that we can look at, as the 1831 and 1821 ones are incomplete or not available.

Please can anyone give me any hints on where to search pre 1841? I have been searching BMD on Ancestry, but seem to be hitting brick walls everywhere.
