I think Sam died before John Edward was born, or he left her - cos in the 1861 census Sarah is with her mother, calling the kids Shepherd - and John Edward is only 1month old |

By the way. She may not have called the kids Shepherd, it may have been a mix-up at the time of the 1861 census. John Edward is called Waterhouse in 1881 & it's unlikely he would have known his father. |

I think it's the only way, Annie. As there's so many Samuel Waterhouses in the Bradford area you need his occupation & approx dob to sort things out. |
