Hi Everyone
As you were all so BRILLIANT - especially Ozibird - at finding Albert, would you please now help me find Sam!!

Samuel Waterhouse and Sarah Shepherd were married 1852 Q4 - ref 9b 13, and that's as far as I've got.

I found what I thought was a match on IGI - b. 5 May 1824 in Eccleshill - which is where Sarah was born - but on the census records he's married to someone else - so he's either a bigamist or he's not the right one, however I've drawn a blank finding another one that fits.

There are a few older ones born in the right area, all with different families, it feels like the whole of Yorkshire was populated with Sam Waterhouses at one time and I'm not experienced enough to see the wood for the trees!!!

Heres hoping you can come through for me again, and thanks in advance for trying.
Annie

How do you know the 1852 marriage is the right one?

Do you have any birth cert to confirm the names of the couple?

I think Sam died before John Edward was born, or he left her - cos in the 1861 census Sarah is with her mother, calling the kids Shepherd - and John Edward is only 1month old

Marriages Jun 1879
ASHTON Ann Bradford,Y. 9b 226
Brook Edwin Bradford Y. 9b 226
RUSHWORTH James Bradford, Y. 9b 226
WATERHOUSE Sarah Bradford, Y. 9b 226

Annie, even though Sarah is with James Rushworth in 1871, she probably didn't marry him until 1879 if the above is the right one. Therefore there may have been a separation.

Really the only way you're going to be sure is to get his marriage cert or one of the children's beirth certs to see what his occupation was.

By the way. She may not have called the kids Shepherd, it may have been a mix-up at the time of the 1861 census. John Edward is called Waterhouse in 1881 & it's unlikely he would have known his father.

hi
i just presumed he'd died, about 1860 but wonder now if this 71 (and Kaz's 81) ones are correct after all - more work needed here - might have to send off for a cert or two after all
thanks for the ideas

I think it's the only way, Annie. As there's so many Samuel Waterhouses in the Bradford area you need his occupation & approx dob to sort things out.

His marriage would give you both of those.
