Debbie,

Are you using the Complete Index on Ancestry are are you looking on another site?

It's the Partially Transcribed index that only goes us to the early 1900's. You need the Complete Index for anything after that time, and you can't just put in a name and search. You have to look at every qrt. for every year you want to look at and look through the alphabetical list of names that come up in each qtr.

If he was 50 when he died in about 1931, his birth is well within the scope of freebmd................

BUT.......how do you know which record might be correct? You have info about where he died......he may not have been born there.

You need his marriage cert............to find out his father's details.........then you might find him on a census, and learn where he was born

Do you know where John Sandall was born? Have you found him on a census with birthplace given? There is this one at about the right time, but born in Lincolnshire:-

Name: John Sandall
Year of Registration: 1881
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Bourne (1837-1933)
County: Lincolnshire
Volume: 7a

From information from Debbie in a pm, Edith's surname is Lucas. Her name is Edith Ann/Annie Lucas.

That could be the birth Brenda, although Debbie thought she was born 1888. However I couldn't find her in the 1891 census, so you could be right.

Hope Debbie comes back to the thread and reads this

If that is the right birth then this is her in 1901:-

Brenda they are right , well the marriage is most def.and I would say the death is too , does it say how old John was at death etc , might give a lead on his birth I'd say birth would be abt 1887 onwards as he was a fair bit older than Edith but have to chk withy grandparents

The death is at age 69 which is older than you thought.

Hmm Brenda your a genius , lol
When I spoke to my grandmother the other night she did mention Atherstone and was fairly sure that was where John was born/grew up but spoke to her today and mentioned the Bourne and it didn't ring any bells with her or grandad & generally when asking /talking about the family something normally rings a bell doesn't it and she doesn't seem to think that the family were not actually that far away from her side of the family.
I guess now I need to post a thread for the census's for the Atherstone John from 1872 -1901 , might give a few clues .
