I'm tracing to trace the birth record for my grandfather, Ernest. He was born in Feb 1903 in or about Wolverhampton, though possibly Aston in Birmingham. The reason I'm not entirely sure as he was born out of wedlock. His mother's name was Elizabeth Hall, she was born in Wolverhampton in 1880ish, and if it's the correct person she was working as a servant on the 1901 census in Aston. Ernest eventually became Ernest Newton when his mother married James Newton but his birth obviously wouldn't have been registered as a Newton. I have Ernest's marriage certificate and his birth year is given as 1901 but the family seem to think that's not correct (he enlisted during WWI as a boy soldier and lied about his age!). I don't know if I'll get to the bottom of his birth mystery but anybody who can help or give me some pointers would be very appreciated. |

Thanks for your help guys! I don't know if Ernest was registered with a middle name (he certainly didn't use one on his marriage certificate or the birth certificate for one of his children!) but coincidentally one of his sons has James as a middle name! Hmmm, the plot thickens......... |
