Turner (Thomas) - b abt 1845 Ireland

Hi,

Not sure if anyone can help. I'm looking at a Thomas Turner b abt 1845 Ireland. He was married to Ellen Turner. I have three children for them Margaret b1863 in Consett Co Durham, Ellia b1865 in Ireland and Ellen b1871 in Middlesbrough. Margaret died 22/12/1935 in Newcastle upon tyne.

Now, Ive found some info from ancestry.co.uk that shows a USA census of a Thomas Turner (1880 federal census). Shows a Thomas Turner in Birmingham, Delaware, Pennsylvania. He was aged 35 a born abt 1845 in Ireland. His spouse at this time was Ellen H. Also residing there were Ellen 12, Mary 10, Kate 7, Anna 5 and Sarah 4.

I have to admit Im unsure where to turn to see how to find if there is any match or not. The dates are out slightly and if it was the same, would suggest he moved to the UK, then to the US and maybe back to the UK. So, for this I suppose Id need to check immigration?

Just wondering if anyone can point me (or shove me!) in the right direction here.

Many thanks.

Hi Darrel! A tip for searching US censuses at Ancestry -- you can do it, you just can't see all the details.

If you guess the details right, though, it will show them to you.

Thus, in the 1870 census:

Thomas Turner
Birmingham, Delaware, PA
abt 1840 Ireland

Ellen Turner
Birmingham, Delaware, PA
abt 1839 Ireland

Too close not to be the ones you see in 1880, I'd guess. Coincidence indeed, though. There were actually several Thomas Turners in the US through those censuses, born around those years in Ireland. Not a great big coincidence -- a not uncommon name, and a period of much immigration to the US, including from Ireland.

Searching for Turners in 1870 in Birmingham, Delaware, PA, we get this complete list:

Eliza S Turner Birmingham, Delaware, PA abt 1826
Ellen Turner Birmingham, Delaware, PA abt 1839
Ellen Turner Birmingham, Delaware, PA abt 1867
Joseph C Turner Birmingham, Delaware, PA abt 1830
Mary Turner Birmingham, Delaware, PA abt 1870
Thomas Turner Birmingham, Delaware, PA abt 1840

None was born in England (use England as search term, none of them is in results).

Eliza, Ellen and Mary were born in Pennsylvania (use Pennsylvania as search term, it shows for them). (Eliza was presumably married to Joseph, who was born in another state, likely.)

Looks like coincidence. One less complication, anyhow!

Ah great stuff, many thanks for the prompt reply. A firm coincidence indeed but at least another thing ticked of my list!

Thanks again.
