Would anyone know if or how I could find out if my GT Grandfather married in a particular place ;
John H Sutton -m- Selina Handley mar 1921 in where we are led to believe Coombe Abbey grounds ,(yes the big historical place) tried emailing them but had no reply , how typical .

Hiya,

Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate? Maybe that might give you some extra info as it always (well all the ones I have) says the name of the church/register office and if it is by licence or after banns

wherever they married it would have tohave been licensed for marriages. its only recently that licences are granted for other venues from churches or register offices, Your best bet would be to get the cert cos that will state where the marriage took place.

heres the GRO ref

Mar qtr 1921
John h Sutton to Handley Foleshill 6d 1177

Foleshill was in Warwickshire whereas Combe Martin is Devon?? unless theres another Combe Martin.

Seems like they didnt marry in the grounds,

It was Coombe Abbey not COOMBE MARTIN , wherever that is .
We are not 100% sure but it has been said thats where they got married , in the grounds of COOMBE ABBEY , Warwickshire , we know he was a gardener there but well whos to say if they did or didnt.

Combe comes under the Chipping Norton registration district, so I would have expected Combe/Coombe Abbey to be the same.

You will have to buy the certificate to be sure.

I don't know what the situation is now since all kinds of places are licenced for marriage, but I do know that at the time you are talking about no one could marry out of doors, the ceremony had to take place inside a building.

As previously mentioned, the marriage certificate will tell you exactly where the event took place.
