Hi Ian. I am not connected but had a look for you.

Phyllis and William's marriage was registered July/Sept. Qtr. in Sunderland. vol 10a 1003.
Copy of this certificate will give you their ages, their Father's names and occupations and witnesses who may be siblings.

William's death registered, age 53.Sunderland.1941 April/June Qtr. vol 10a 1216.
Copy of this certificate will give you the cause of death, and if it was a shipyard accident then there would have to be a
Postmortem and an inquest, and you should be able to find out the details of this, both through the court records and newspaper reports at the time
This was of course War time and the records may not always have been dealt with as fully and Newspapers may not pick up on all these items but there must be records in Sunderland.

I could not find them in the registry of births yet, so the Father's details and occupations will be a great help.

Hope this is of help. Ethel.

Ian Report 2 Oct 2007 20:57

I'm trying to find information about my grandfather, William Charlton. Born 1887 or 1888. Married Phyllis Jane White Burnham in Sunderland in 1917. One son, William Burnham Charlton (my father), born 31 May 1918.

William (grandfather) died 27 April 1941. I seem to recall that this was in, or as a result, of an accident in the shipyard, where he was working. He is buried in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland, along with Phyllis.

I would love to hear from anyone who may be able to help me.

Thank you,

Ian Charlton
