Born 1854 - the son of a Sgt Thomas Shirley - Educated by the Army and served with 82nd South Lancs Regt. Left army while with the regiment in South Africa after 18 years service in about 1884. Had wife and son called Thomas with him. Found records of him in trouble with debt (still in S.A.) in 1902. My Grandfather visited him while his regiment was in Cape Town.
