Charles Henry Benjamin Palmer born Plymouth Devon1926. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16 and was a shipwright. He is my late father in law and I would like to find out about his family.

Have you managed to locate his birth entry in the GRO index? This will provide you with the information required to obtain a copy of his birth certificate. From that you will learn the names of his parents.

Year 1926
Qtr Oct-Dec
Name PALMER Charles H B
Mother's maiden name LASHBROOK
District Plymouth
Volume 5b
Page 276

With such an unusual mother's maiden name it may be possible to locate a PALMER - LASHBROOK marriage in the GRO index, but it is better to wait until you have the parents names from the birth certificate. That said,

The Devon FHS "Plymouth Marriage Index" has a entry which is interesting.

Date 8 April 1916
Groom PALMER Ernest Alfred
Bride LASHBROOK Beatrice Rebecca
Church St Jude

A quick search of FreeBMD fails to show the marriage to obtain the GRO details. FreeBMD has only around 75% of the marriages for the second quarter of 1916. However a check of the images shows.

Year 1916
Qtr Apr-Jun
Name LASHBROOK Beatrice R
Groom's surname PALMER
District Plymouth
Volume 5b
Page 539

Assuming that this is the parents of Charles (his birth certificate will tell you), then this marriage certificate will give you the ages of the bride and groom, the names and occupations of their respective fathers and hopefully give you the lead to get back to the 1901 census.
