Linda Report 30 Sep 2007 16:51

I feel really guilty asking for more help when everyone helped so much in my last quest, but I'm up against a brick wall with this one and it will be a miracle if there are any replies...
bear with me with this one.
I have a Thomas Andrew Rhoades POB Kirton in Lindsey Lincolnshire. DOB March 1879 - DOD 01/09/1963 these dates I know to be true as I have his death certificate.
My dad's mum was called Maud Mary Rhoades (she wasn't married) DOB 16/04/1901 DOD March 1988
In the 1891 census I found Thomas was living with his grandparents William DOB 03/10/1822 DOD 1909
and Bessey (maiden name unknown) c1830.
and a Harry Rhoades which I'm assuming was his brother as there are only a couple of years between them.
I know this is a lot to ask and I have honestly tried myself for hours on end to try and find out anything about this whole family.
Thomas A
Maud Mary
Harry
William
Bessey
You see there is a possibility that Thomas is really my grandfather on my dad's side but it was only a rumour as we kids knew him as our great uncle but he is named on my dad's wedding certificate as his father but on my dad's birth certificate father's name is blank the other rumour is that Thomas and Maud were brother and sister!!! So that could be why everything was hush hush..
Would really appreciate any help on this one guys and gals.

There is this marriage at about the right time and place for William Rhoades:-

Name: William Rhoades
Year of Registration: 1849
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Boston
County: Lincolnshire
Volume: 14
Page: 338

Of the other 7 people on the page there is an Elizabeth Mountain. Could that be Bessie?

I wouldn't read too much into the fact that your father named his uncle as his father on his marriage certificate. Illegitimate children often either made up a father's name or used another relative's name, i.e. uncle grandfather brother etc. so as to look more respectable in front of their in-laws.

I think Harriet from 1861 must have died and Harriet no 2 was born after.

Thank you everyone, you've given me family members I didn't know I had.
I just wish we could have found out more about Thomas Andrew as he lived with my family before I was born and died when I was about 8 so can still remember him and him whacking my brother across the back of his legs with his cane...lol
thanks again, Linda
