Struggling with 1871 census.

Possible for Ann in 1861 which gives place of birth as Elgin

1891 is fascinating as several children have Canada as place of birth

Hello Glitter Baby,
Thank you. They married in 1869 and I doubt if they would be anywhere but Morayshire as daughter Jessie Ann was born Elgin in 1870.Ann was born Elgin in 1844.

Hi Deb,
That is the family all right though the father John has lost five years in age and the mother Annie has acquired a middle initial.
Thank you for all your help.

Hi Joan,

I really think Glitter is onto something with the Canada link.

I can't find any trace of this family in either 71 or 81.

Could they have possible gone to Canada and then returned by 91?

Can anyone pick them up on passenger lists? I have findmypast, but it doesn't start until 1890.

If Jessie was born in 1870 in Elgin, then they probably left for Canada shortly after her birth.

Hi again Deb,
I've found them on my 1881 discs-14 South Guildry Street,Elgin. It has Jane (9),Alex,James and Emma(3),born Canada but John age 1 born Elgin so they must have emigrated about 1871 as daughter Jessie was born Elgin 1870 and re-emigrated back to Scotland around 1879.Wonder what went wrong?

This site may be helpful

...if only everywhere had a site like this!

Mhairi Queen of Scots Report 29 Sep 2007 13:31

For example

NM000736
ANNIE ALLAN (nee GALLON)
c. 1845 to 18 APR 1910

Date of Birth : c. 1845
Spouse's Name : JOHN ALLAN
Headstone Ref : NE(E)533
Date of Death : 18 APR 1910
Place of Death : ROSEBANK SOUTH GUILDRY STREET ELGIN

If you then click on "view full details" (to the right), it'll bring up a new page. Then on the left of that page go down to "view details" and it shows you everything to do with that person. Your Annie had a piece put in the newspaper when she died.

The headstone ref can also be checked to see who else is mentioned.
