Hi Ian
If you haven't already got your original birth certificate you should apply for it, then apply for access to your adoption file.
With the names of your birth parents you can trawl the BMD's and do an electoral roll search.
Go to www.gro.gov.uk click into adoptions and it will explain how to apply for them. As you was adoption adopted prior to 1975 you will be required to have mandatory counselling, the GRO website website will explain the reason behind that too.

i was adopted at birth from bristol and would like to try and find my birth parents i was born in 1971 and was given my fathers surname i am fairly sure from some research that my mothers surname was richards any help would be greatlly appreciated
