This lady was my Great Grandmother and worked as a laundress in Lambeth and even worked as a stoker in the gas works at Lambeth in WWI. She then went on to work as a cook in an officer's club in the west end of London until around 1920-22 (could have been a club for Australian soldiers and may have been in Poland Street????) and then she went to work as a cook in Harefield I believe at the Australian Soldiers TB Sanatorium at Harefield Park. I have very scant information about her and little documentation. She died in the 70's in Hemel Hempstead and had lived with her daughter Lillian (Babs) for her remaining years. Not sure if anyone has come across her? Many thanks! |

Pam this is great... many thanks... the female lodgers would fit with the fact that a great aunt told me that at the top of 5 Bradley Street was a separate flat used by the metropolitan police to place women who were on the wrong side of the law... actually my aunt intimated that these were well to do women who were pregnant but not married and they spent their last months of pregnancy in the top of this household with their maids! |
