You people are truly amazing! Sylvia and Paul.
There is a William Victor, William Frederick and William Richard in direct line for my fathers side. Paul thank you so much for the long list of them in Richmond.
Off to do some retail therapy in Manchester today but back to it tonight. I'll have to relook at all this info then. Thank you all again

I found this -
"The limber boxes serving to carry the tools of the wheeler and collar maker”.

So your man was a wheelwright as the collar maker made the harness for the horses to pull the gun carriage of the field cannon & the wheelwright to keep the gun carriage wheels in good order.

Update: & this -
Trade, Proficiency & Skill at Arms Badges,1900 to approx 1960 (British Army Badges)
Badge of the "wheeler" or wheelwright could be worn by many ranks up to wheeler major and later by pattern makers, shipwrights, carriage & wagon repairers as well as wood turners & machinists. Shown in white metal and embroidered.

Thank you for all this info. I'm always amazed at the responses from GR members and their kindness to those of us who don't know where to look.
I have looked on a site by Kevin Asplin who has a lot to do with the Boer War but can't find anything as yet. I've emailed hants.gov.uk to ask if they have any further info.

I've just found this bit of info.

.... the usual period of service of a man joining the army in the late Victorian period was 7 years with the Colours (i.e. a full time soldier) and 5 years with the Reserve (i.e. reverted to civilian employment but liable to be recalled for army service in time of war).

.....if ..... your man had completed his 7 years with the Colours and had entered the
Reserve and like many others would have been recalled for the Boer War providing he was still in his 5 year period with the Reserve. In this case he would have kept his original number and rejoined his original regiment which technically he hadn't left while in the Reserve. .....

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 31 Aug 2007 22:09

I think wheeler meant wheelwright which in the field artillery was a very important job.

No, conscription didn't start until 1916 although there was talk of it in 1901.
The Boer War was on at the time but he may have just joined the regular army. The 49th was a regular division.

He may not have had permission to marry so that is why his wife & child lived off barracks.

Thank you. I wondered whether there was National Service at the time or whether he had signed up for a particular war. He was married and lived away from his wife and 1 year old son in the 1901 census. I can't find any other info on him at the mo. The census states he was a 'wheeler' but don't know what that entailed.

Here's a little bit of info from Hantsweb.

Liepzig Barracks, Ewshott Common
Date of construction 1903 (So it was just a hut in 1901!!)

Named in commemoration of the Battle of Leipzig on 18 October 1813, known as the 'Battle of the Nations'. An Allied army of Austrian, Russian and Prussian troops and one British Artillery unit - the 2nd Rocket Troop, defeated the French Army commanded by Napoleon.

Leipzig Barracks, in Ewshot, were built in 1903 for a Brigade (now Regiment) of the Royal Field Artillery.

Now Demolished.

A family member Harry Blomfield Stanford is on the 1901 census as being in the RS Hut Barracks Ewshot, Hampshire along with lots of other young men. Can anyone shed a light on what they were doing there and the likelihood of them seeing any action please.
Thanks
Di
I've just re-read what I've written. No jokes please.
