HERBERTS FROM NEWPORT

Beverley Report 31 Aug 2007 09:57

I am currently searching for ancestors on my mothers side of the family.
My grandmother was Dorcas May Herbert and she was born in 1904 in Newport, South Wales. She was the youngest of 6? children and had a brother called Noah who killed in the Aberfan disaster.
Dorcas was married in Pontypridd to Harold Francis Roles in 1925 and she moved to England with her daughter Glenys (my mother) who was then aged 9, leaving her son Derek in South Wales with thier father Harold.
Any information relating to this would be brilliant as I have very little information to go by.
Many thanks
Bev Cooper

There is no entry on the GRO index recording a death of Noah Herbert in OND 1966

Did he have another forename?

Many thanks for this information.
I had no idea about my great grandfathers name but I was told as a child he was a Baptist Minister (whether this is true or not I'm not sure).
I'm not sure if Noah was working in the mine when the disaster happened but I remember my mother going to Aberfan when it happened, when I was a child.
Adaline and Noah were definately my grandmothers siblings, I didn't get told of the other names, either that or my memory ain't what it used to be!!
My grandmothers side of the family is going to be a little more difficult to track down I feel, however this is a brilliant start.
I have managed to trace my father's side back to the 17th century and have even found a second cousin I didn't know about!
Anyway a big thank you to you all for this information, I am most grateful

You could well be right Reg as Adeline, Rose and Margaret remained in that area.
My grandmother left South Wales after the divorce from my Grandfather Harold Francis Roles leaving her son Derek with him and bringing my mother Glenys to England.
Also Adeline is an unusual name although Williams isn't for Wales!
Thanks again

Would anyone have a clue how I could find out if William Herbert who was married to Rachel was in fact a Baptist Minister?

According to 1901 census, his occupation was 'Coal Hewer'..........

I'll go with coal hewer though.

How can I access this information and is it costly?

I have obtained the info from Ancestry, which is a subscription site.......they charge £79.95 for a year.

There are monthly rates, and they often give 14-day free trials, for which you have to register your credit card details. If you use that option, and don't wish to subscribe fully, you have to make sure you notify them in time.

You can also get various censuses on findmypast..........another pay-to-view site; and 1901 is on the 'official' site (google for the link). Searching is free, but viewing images is chargeable.

1881 census is free on two sites...........

Ancestry

and www.familysearch.org

I feel cheeky asking but would you be able to look up anything else to do with William Herbert. Such as his parents and possibly Rachel's.

Do you think Ada Herbert could be Adeline?
I'm almost certain that Rossannah Herbert would be Rose and Margret being Maggie. The others you have mentioned are new names to me but I'll go with them as my Nan didn't talk much of her departure from Wales as her divorce from my grandfather was well publicised in the press so I am told.

I don't mind looking, but I think it would be more fun for you to look for William and Rachel in 1881.........

Give it a go...........!!

This looks like the marriage............
