Hi. Could anyone please see if they can find a marriage for me.

It is a Mr Richard Dundon marrying a Miss Delia Halpin........unfortunately I dont know when it was. They had a child in 1939 and were married then. If anyone can help I would be most grateful.

P.S - Their daughter was born in Lambeth and they live in Walworth, Southwark at the time of her birth

Many Thanks

Georgina

Hi.

I haven't really searched any specific years, as I am flicking between this site and ancestry, where they just throw the whole lot at you and let you sift through yourself!!! Sorry to be so unhelpful!

I am going to start having a look between 1929 & 1939. I will start with 1939 and work backwards!

I've checked 1936/7/8/9 and haven't found them.

Do you know if the birth you found was the eldest child?

Georgina,

Just because they said they were married when the child's birth was registered doesn't mean they were!

Kath

This is a very complicated case!!! It my half brothers mothers side. She was bought up by people, who aren't the people stated on the birth cert. It all a bit confusing and I was hoping to try and set a few things straight for him!!! However I am lucking out everywhere!!!

I am not sure if they had any other children, or why she was not brought up by them.

Its so irritating as I dont know which way to look.

There are even queries as to whether people on her birth cert are her real parents??!! I just wanted to find out about them in the hope if shedding light on things!!!

Sorry!!

Also Dundon and Halpin are Irish names - they might even be from Ireland, but my limited research cant seem to find them there either!!

Aaargh!!

Hi Reg

Really??? I know its many years ago, but did they not have to prove they were married??

If thats the case - then maybe they aren't even the parents - could they get away with lying about that aswell??!

She may have been brought up by other people because her mother died.

My grandmother died 6 weeks after giving birth to my youngest aunty. Aunty was brought up by a family a few streets away (but not adopted by them).

All my aunty has is a sheet of paper signed by her father and the other couple saying that he agrees to them bringing her up.

Families are very complicated things.

No Georgina,

You didn't have to prove you were married - just be good at telling fibs.

We have one in our family where the birth certificate of the child would make you assume the parents were married, but we also have the marriage certificte which proved the marriage happened 10 years after the child was born. This was in the 1930's/1940's.

Hi

The Daughters name was Mary Theresa Dundon. Born 26/10/1939. Registered 5/12/1939.

I have a copy of the birth certificate.. She was born in Sub District - Princes - Borough of Lambeth

Thanks Kath

Would they have to prove the child was theirs?? Obviously the father might not be the real father, but would the mother have to prove herself in anyway?? Like nowadays?

I doubt it, especially as most children then were born at home, so no hospitals passing on records like today. Sometimes there wasn't even a midwife - just a woman from the area who helped out.
