1949er Report 23 Aug 2007 22:43

You're not kidding an interesting family, my head spins just trying to work it all out, have been at it for years!
Macluff says on the 1881 census he is born in Spain, on his birth cert of 1838 he is born in Leman Street,Goodmans Fields, Whitechapel (Same place as my elusive Gt.Grandmother Margaret 3 years later) he married twice and gives his occ as an artist...He died in 1893 by, according to his death cert, "bullet wound in head, suicide whilst temperaily insane, which is what I shall be if I carry on with this branch!
The Belilos lived in Spain until they left in 1492 under the Decree of Expulsion by the Catholic Kings, they went to Gibraltar. In 1779 Spain mounted an all out siege on Gibraltar in an attempt to recover it, life became dangerous and the Belilos left for London, one branch returned to Gibraltar at the beginning of the 19th cent but my Belilos stayed in London, all this information I have but still no birth cert for my Gt.Grandmother!
Yes as you say very interesting....

What an interesting family though. What's the history of the sons' names?

I notice that in 1881 Macluff says he's born in Spain. Is that artistic licence?

Thanks for all your thoughts...

Reg...yes Sarah & Israel are the right age to be the parents..I have Prosper's birth cert 1850 parents Israel & Sarah....

Margaret...Belile yes thats them, the trouble with Belilo is that it can be spelt in numerous ways, on the 1851 census Margaret is under Margt Bilogh!

Ozibird...Thanks for that but I have all the census for the family up to 1901, most of the birth, death and marriage certs for the family. 1851 Israel is a dancing master and on his son Macluff's birth cert of 1838 he is a quill merchant, what a change of occupation....

A trail through the Parish Registers seems the only answer.

Thank you all once again

On the 1851 census Israel is a dancing master.

People are often called by pet names all their lives. The children may have not known his real first name but he used it on official papers like the census.

Are Israel and Sarah of the right ages to be her parents? Or could they be her grandparents?

Reg

1949er Report 23 Aug 2007 21:13

Sorry, Israel not Issac......

I wish it were then my problem would be solved! she even gives the profession of her father "William" as Gentleman on her marriage cert in 1871. This is the same name and profession of the father as her brother gives on his marriage cert in 1873 although his parents on the census are Israel and Sarah..
Although Ozibird I must admit I never gave a middle name a thought...

Was he a William Isaac or an Isaac William?

1949er Report 23 Aug 2007 21:00

Yes they are...Issac and Sarah Belilo but on her marriage cert she gives her fathers name as William Belilo...Issac died in 1859 and Sarah in 1861, so why give William as her father, why not Issac "deceased"...

Its been one of my biggest family history headaches!

Are her parents not on 1841 census?

The marriage cert will confirm her father's details

A long shot I know but here goes.....
If anyone is visiting London Metropolitan Archives in Northampton Rd London would you be so very kind and look up a reference for me?
X081/085 its the baptisms for St.Mark, Goodmans Fields area
June 1840 - Nov 1870..
My Gt.Grandmother Margaret Belilo was born in Leman Street, Goodmans Fields in 1841 (on the 1841 census she is 4 months old) I cannot find her on BMD, GRO or anywhere else for that matter! I have her marriage and death details but have had no luck what so ever in finding her birth details, I just need to confirm her parents.
Thank you
Wendy
