Beverley Report 7 Sep 2007 23:30

This is a bit of a long shot but I hope you can help. I am trying to trace Arthur Whiting, I know he lived in Tipton in the 1940's, was married to Gladys, died around 1947/48 but other than than know very little else. he was my mothers birth father but died when she was very young and she would love to know about him. Arthur and Gladys Whiting had 2 daughters Patricia and Sandra, and possibly Linda but she may have been my grans second husbands - I am not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

If you are obtaining one of margaret's marriage certificates this would give her age at the time of marriage which would then allow you to try and match a year of birth/birth record, saying this though sometimes people didnt know there exact age so it may be out by a year or two but would definately give you a better idea of her year of birth.

A huge thank you for all the info you have given me.
So much for me to go on and so many certificates to buy!. The 3 births are a great starting point, I really hope one of them is margaret. Let the fun begin!

Marie.

This is him...and his wife, the ship is named slightly different though maybe a typing error or transcribe error in view of similarity!

Passenger destination port: Wellington, New Zealand
Passenger destination: Wellington, New Zealand
Age: 46
Marital Status: Married

Passenger recorded on: Page 1 of 4
The following people with the same last name travelled on this voyage: -
Mrs A HELLYER 36yrs old - married - Page 1 of 4

There is a Mr B M and Mrs Hellyer travelling from plymouth to New zealand on the same ship only 3 days after the above went, they were exactly the same ages too, could they also be your relatives following the above out to New Zealand?

I just did a search for 1940 and have the following one possibility!

Elizabeth M Marsh - aged 47 - W. Bromwich - 2nd qtr 1940

Nothing in 1939 that could be her!

Sorry they are the only 3 between the years 1941 -1945, you say that your dad was born 1927 and was about 15 when she died which would mean a year of death of about 1942.
I have searched 1941,1942,1943,1944, and 1945 deaths and the only 3 possibilities are the 3 i sent, so if it isnt any of them then unfortunately i dont have anything further.

I searched for Durrance Powell's marriage and found the following!
Durrance B POWELL, to Sharon Daft in Nottingham in 1991 December Volume No 8
Page No 616 Reg No 1291

I searched for Alana's marriage and the following is the only one
Alana A POWELL, to Andrew F Harris @ Kingston/t in 2004 July, District No 240, Page No 0063 Ent No 103, Source Code RD

Are these likely to be correct at all?
What else is it you would like me to search as unfortunately i dont have access to living person records!
Thanks
Ceri

Hi Ceri
I don't think those deaths are her as I am sure they lived in southampton/fareham when she died because my gramp stayed in the house when he remarried and that was in either of those places, my dad said he was 15 when she die and he was born in 1927. I am trying to contact my uncle in southampton for more info but he has not replied yet, but to be honest I don't think he will remember much now either

Hi Ian,
Not sure if you can help but is worth a try.
I am looking for my birth mother a Lillian Powell born Lillian Soulsby 1925 Tudhoe Co. Durham. She married ( I think she married him) a Robert Powell. At one time they lived at Ferryhill then Stanley area Co. Durham.
They had 2 children Durrance and Alana, my half brother and half sister. The last I heard of them was some 42 years ago, when they lived at Stanly ( area)
I live in Cape Town South Africa, so not easy for me to check things.
If you can help great.
Regards
Barry Soulsby
