Trying to find Dickinson

Hi Ivy, i haven't aclue if the children of Francis and Alice married as Dickinson/dickenson/fisher or frisher??
This has been quite a shock to me. I've gone round in circles for the last year on and off and there is a couple of other members also searching for him also - with no joy.
so for him - and i'm sure it's him - to turn up using Alices maiden name is quite a surprise....... i wondered if the enumerator got it wrong ....maybe they were out or away when the records were being done and with Alice being born in Overton perhaps she was always regarded as a Fisher by the older Locals?
I've been on the BMd site but haven't found anything yet regarding a death for Alice and Francis or Frank as we now know he was called, plus like you mentioned the childrens marriages....i don't know.........i would love to get to the bottom of this...how strange it's turned out, i thought he either must have emigrated or died after the 1891 census...i must find out who the children married and try and bring the family down to the present day and see if there are any "Tales to be told"......maybe i'm getting carried away and it's only a mistake in the records?
Thankyou for helping me...it's been fantastic
kind regards
angela

Hi Angela, Kathryn,

This is a definite puzzler, isn't it? Thank goodness Kathryn found that 1901. Angela, "which way up" are you following this family? Do you know if the children married as Fisher or as Dick'nson?

Thankyou again!!
I was just thinking that Francis may not have married Alice because she had been married before and he took her name for the childrens sake...but that rules this out!!

Great!!!
Thankyou ever so much!
This has to be him and his family......i would never have found him, never crossed my mind to look under his wife's maiden name if that is her maiden name as i see on the 1891 census there is a young child Edward T Fisher aged 6....was wondering if that was Alice's from before Francis came along....i wonder now if Francis married Alice? i thought i had seen it somewhere but can't find it now that they married in 1889?

Nope, that's the only one who shows up on a general search of all censuses!

Many thanks Ivy, that is great! i was wondering if it was Overton or Carnforth that the Fishers came from.....now i'm wondering if the enumerator has the names wrong on the 1901 census......quite a puzzle!!

Angela Report 17 Jan 2008 20:26

Hi kathryn...thankyou very much!!
Now this is a puzzle i wonder why francis would call himself Frank Fisher.....it alll seem to add up with the ages and names as in John(aged 11) and Alice(36) plus Flookburgh and Overton are small fishing Villages....could i be very cheeky and ask you to rule out that there wasn't a Frank Fisher born 1865/6 at flookburgh
this would be a big break though if you have solved the mystry for me of what happened to Francis Dickinson

By the way, the 1891 image clearly says Dickinson, not Dickenson -- in John's case, the name is written out and the i is dotted.

You oughta put a correction in at Ancestry, with a note about your interest in the family.

I think Alice remarried before 1901:

Name: Alise Fisher
Age: 36
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: Frank
Gender: Female
Where born: Overton, Lancashire, England

Name: Frank Fisher
Age: 35
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1866
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Alise
Gender: Male
Where born: Flukeborough, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Heysham
Ecclesiastical parish: Heysham St Peter
Town: Heysham
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Lancaster
Sub-registration district: Heaton
ED, institution, or vessel: 12
Household schedule number: 200

Alise Fisher 36 <<
Annie Fisher 2
Francis Fisher 5
Frank Fisher 35
George Fisher 3
Jana Fisher 8
John Fisher 11 <<

Or not. Can't find a marriage.

Those "Frisher"s in the 1891 household are actually Fisher on the image.

Oh, of course. That IS Francis Dickinson, who has himself changed his name to Fisher. All the details are the same, I now see when I click on him (I added his details above too).

I'll leave it to you for now to puzzle out the connections!

Hi Angela,

I couldn't easily spot them on the 1901 census on Ancestry.

The 1891 census states that both Alice and John were born at Overton.

Many thanks kathryn, only just got back on here and missed your post last night, thankyou again for looking on the emigration list...this is a big help...perhaps it's just another spelling i need to be searching for to find them.....i'm sure they must have stayed in that area...
i appreciate your time and kindness for doing this for me

Hi Angela,

The chances that this is your Francis on the 1891 census seem good. Searching for Franc*s Dick*son b Lanc 1860 to 1870 provides the names of 8 people, only one of whom is born in Flookboro':

Name: Francis Dickenson
Age: 25
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1866
Relation: Boarder
Gender: Male
Where born: Flookburgh, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Carnforth
Ecclesiastical parish: Chapelry Carnforth
Town: Carnforth
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Lancaster
Sub-registration district: Warton
ED, institution, or vessel: 7

Household Members: Name Age
Alice Dickenson 27
Francis Dickenson 25
John Dickinson 1
Edward T Fisher 6
George Frisher 23
Ada S Straith 4
George F Straith 2/12
Margaret Straith 26
Margaret A Straith 6
Richard Straith 27
Thomas Straith 2

Hi Angela -- on the emigration possibility, I checked the 1901 and 1911 Canadian censuses and didn't see anyone who looked like him. The originals, scans and transcriptions are horrific, so it is never certain.

Also checked for Alice, and for marriages and births of children.

No joy. Sorry!

Angela Report 16 Jan 2008 17:39

I think on the 1891 census francis Dickinson is misspelt as francis Dickenson and is married to Alice fisher and they are living with Alices sister in Carnforth with nephew John Fisher...not certain though

Hi, could anybody please help me on the research of Francis Dickinson. Francis was born 1865 at Flookburgh, Lancashire. His Parents were Jane Bland and Francis Dickinson who died in 1865 around the birth of Francis junior. There was an older brother called John who i have information on, but Francis disappears after the 1881 census, he is living at Sand cottage Flookburgh aged 15 under the name Francis Dickinson (Butler) Stepson (Wife Son), his mother Jane remarries to a man called James Butler and they have Five more children, they moved to Overton and Sunderland Point Lancashire then to Glasson Dock, but i can't find Francis with them. A possibility is that he might have emigrated, i was given a lead that he might have married a Ann or Alice Fisher and Dickinson was spelt Dickenson, and he could have been living at Carnforth on the 1891 census, I can't find a death for him, so i'm just presumming he might have emigrated, is there anybody that knows of this man? any information would be much appreciated regards angela
