Hi All Does any one have access to Sussex baptism records & able to help me with this one please. I am looking for baptism details for JOHN RUSSELL b abt 1867 Sussex, possibly Chiddingley Hellingly or Herstmonceaux. What I have so far Marriage 9th June 1888 Parish Church Hellingly Sussex John Russell age 21 occupation Farm Labourer no fathers name or occupation 1891 census Hellingly Sussex John Russell b abt 1867 Chiddingley Sussex occupation Farm Labourer 1901 census Herstmonceaux Sussex John Russell b abt 1867 Hellingly Sussex occupation Milkman on Farm I have found a birth entry for a John Russell 1867 Hailsham Jun 2b 77 But as there is no fathers name on his marriage certificate I have no way of checking if this is the right birth entry. Janice If it is any help, Chiddingley is very close to Hailsham. Is that the only birth record for around that date which seems right? Suzy

Hi Suzy There are 3 birth entries on BMD for 1866/68 1 in Battle 1 in Brighton 1 Hailsham. The problem I have is on the 1881 census there is a John Russell age 13 b Chiddingley recorded as son in law (this is stepson) & there is another John Russell age 14 born Chiddingley, this one in 1871 is recorded as grandson. Hi again Yes, I have looked at the census. Mmmm...it's quite a common name, so difficult. You know the marriage cert you have is correct presumably. Do the names of the witnesses give us any clues? Suzy

This is the 'other' one in 1881, but no way is Ruth snr the mother of the three kids....... Hi Reg Yes I found those, but in the 1871 census the 2 younger boys John & Eli are recorded as grandsons. Thats whats got me stumped. Regards Janice

Hi Reg On the 1871 census Ruth is recorded as 38 so the 1881 census probably should read 47 not 67 I have found a marriage of Stephen Russell to Ruth Wenham 1857 Hailsham. Death of Stephen Russell 1880 Hailsham Marriage of Ruth Russell to James Jenner 1880 Hailsham. These fit in with the second family. Regards Janice

I wonder why the two census records for 1871 and 1881 show John as Ruben and Rebecca's son on one and grandson on another? Do you think he was their unmarried daughter's child who they brought up as their own? That may explain why there is no father's name on John's marriage certificate. Suzy

Hi Suzy Ruben & Rebecca did have 2 older children on the 1861 census Charlotte age 12 & Lucy age 10 so I suppose one of them could have had children without being married. Regards Janice
