Jane Report 6 Sep 2007 20:41

Hi,

Jill asked me to see if I could find David James Blyth EGDELL on the Ploegsteert Memorial for Susan when I visited Belgium last weekend.

I had success and I have the photos but no email address to send them to and I think Susan has deleted her post on this thread.

So Susan, if you read this please pm me and I will send you the photos. Or Jill, if you have Susan's details please could you let me know?

Thanks
Jane

Hi All Well - I could not manage all of them I'm afraid. Partly due to time and partly due to visiting Tyne Cot Cemetry first. This is the largest one and was heartbreaking. OH found the grave and the memorial listing and took the photos as I was in tears. If ever you get the chance to visit the place - do so. The visitors centre (new this year) is remarkable - a disembodied voice reads out the names of the dead and ages where known. Chilling but somehow comforting as they will not be forgotten. We managed Voormezelee and Kemmel Chateau as well. So - I have photos of headstones of Stanley Clarke at Tyne Cot, John Egdell (memorial) at Tyne Cot, Thomas Cuthill at Voormezelee and Patrick Collins at Kemmel Chateau. I am so sorry I could not do the rest but, apart from time constraints, I felt like a limp rag after visiting three cemetries. (Please bear in mind that I am a cynical, well-hard type so this is quite an admission.) It was an unforgettable experience. I will p-m my 'successes' as I need your e-mail addresses please. I will also bump up another thread where someone else (sorry cannot remember her name) is also visiting Ypres shortly. I hope that she can take a few more photos. Jill Jill

Hi All Will do my best with all the Ypres ones. The Vimy one - will not be possible on this trip - but we are planning a day trip to Vimy this year/next year as that was where OH's grandfather won the MM and was severely wounded (he was in the Canadian Expeditionary Force), so I will keep a note of that one. I hope I can do most of these - if not all of them - but will let you know as soon as I return. Jill

Just had a look ar Debbie's post, if she is asking about the Vimy Memorial, that is in France not Belguim. Its a massive memorial to the Canadian's killed during WW1. I have visited it and it is very impressive. The names of the 11,285 Canadians killed in France are carved on the monument. regards Jane

Hi Jill, Cemetery plans are on the CWGC site if you need them. Instead of putting in a named person on the search page click the 'search for..... Cemeteries' at the top of the page. Teresa

The 'In Flanders' fields' exhibition in Ypres is well worth a visit, and, on a lighter note, so are the chocolate shops!!

Hi Debbie We're going to Bruges and visiting Ypres - Presau is a lot further on from Ypres and looks like it's in the wrong direction. However, I will take your details with me and if we do head off that way I will do my best to find him. Jill

No problem, Jill. I'll look for the stuff I had. We went in March 2005 - and had dreadful snow! We missed out on a lot - mainly because of the snow but also because I'd only taken info about 2 relatives. While we were there the lady in the CWGC found yet another 2 for me. Poperinjay is also very poignant - it's where they shot the soldiers who were shell-shocked or objected. If I remember rightly it was quite near Passchendale and both are within 15 mins of Ypres. Because this is the 90th anniversary of Passchendale there are various ceremonies taking place - try google to see if anything will be on while you're there. Before I go I'm supposed to be finding as much as possible on the two who died there as there is a museum which wants to do a sort of profile of as many as they can before the centenary. Some cemeteries are in France - I want to go to Riems and Longueval - and we will be staying in Lille as it's actually only 10 miles from Ypres. Betty, I'll be happy to but Jill will be there first, maybe she'd be better taking it - worst that can happen is you get a photo from each of us!!

Thanks for this Woody. I will have to find a map before I get there. I have one request already and would rather be looking for a grave or two than just wandering around. Jill

Woody's Report 31 Jul 2007 23:32

Jill, I intend to go on 23rd August but have been before so will try to pass on what I remember! The Menin Gate is in Ypres (also called Ieper); Tyne Cot Cemetery is above Passchendale and at the entrance there is a small cupboard (set in the wall) with a register showing the names and location of name or grave. The Menin Gate commemorates those who died before August 1917 and have no known grave with the remainder being commemorated on curved panels around Tyne Cot Cemetery. For the rest of the cemeteries I should have a map showing locations and I have a couple of books but they refer to Passchendale mainly. There is (or was) a CWGC 'shop' in Ypres and the lady there will help a great deal. If you need to take a taxi to any cemeteries the drivers do NOT charge for waiting time. Hope you have a good trip and find all you're looking for.
