calm down people maybe the person who asked the question is unable to come back online for any number of reasons maybe they accidently put the question on twice maybe after reading the comments they feel unable to respond, i know i would be very upset by the comments if i genuinelly was unable to get online for a while lou

Helen, thank you for the warning, but I am aware of the two Bromleys - my mother's mother's side came from Bromley by Bow; the Sarah Standing that was found on VRI (my mother's father's side) was Bromley Kent. I just wondered whether the Hackney death is the right one, 1883 I think, because she was missing off the 1881, and could have been in Hackney Hospital. I've searched the 1881 census for every Sarah Forster and Foster shown as other than Wife (as she wasn't home with husband and children), and she just isn't there. I've even tried putting just S and F, in case she was in a mental hospital or even prison, but nothing came up. I'm going to start another thread in case this original one gets deleted - I'll come back and post the number here so we can meet up again on the new one. Thanks again for everyone's help Jan.

I can't believe that someone has posted this thread and not even bothered to come back and check it. Whats the point???? I know sometimes they get lost, but this has been up the top for the last few days. I have contacted people on GC who have names in their tree that are similar to mine, they reply, I reply again and then I don't hear anything from them again. I don't know, what are people like these days.

Jan If I may make an observation - be careful with the death you have found in Hackney, as it may not be your relation. There is a Bromley in Kent (where I come from originally) and there is a Bromley-by-Bow in East London (where some of my ancesters came from). It's easy to confuse the two! Still no answer to this original question! I've been off line for a while, just found this string and read the offers of help, many thanks. Norfolk is not an urgent one, and one of my new cousins lives near there and has found just about all that can be found I think. The ones that are really bugging me are in Kent. I found from my grandfather's birth certificate that his mother was Sarah Maria Standing. She doesn't seem to be in the 1881 census (I found all the rest of the family born in Bexley Heath, living in Plumstead), and she was dead by the 1891. A friend staying for a while in Bexley Heath went to the library there for me, and found her on the 1871, born Syddenham, born about 1829. I cannot find any trace of her birth, or her marriage to William Godrey Foster or Forster. Their first child was born in about 1851. I think I've found the record of her death in Hackney. Someone found a record on the VRI of a Sarah Standing born in Bromley in 1828, I don't know if thats my one or not. Also on the 1871 was a John Foster/Forster, aged 15, born and living in Bexley Heath, occupation Baker. I've tried to find him in the 1881, 1891 and 1901, but can't, and its quite important to me to try and find his relationship to my family. (He is not the John Forster living at Sydney Terrace Plumstead in the 1881). If you are able to help, I'd be very grateful. Jan

Jan, I sometimes wonder if people post a question and expect to be emailed with the answer. Another thing that really winds me up is when people post the same question on several boards. There's nothing more infuriating than working on a problem only to discover it's already been solved on the other board. Jan, sorry I can't help with any research for you, most of mine is based around the Midlands, which is fortunate because that is where I live. I'm also lucky in that there is an LDS family history centre in Redditch, they are only open for 10 hours a week and I manage 2 of those. Perhaps we ought to start a Black List of people not to bother with. If they can't take the trouble to at least acknowledge that they have read what we found out for them, its not worth wasting our time trying. I did a search for someone the other day, she wrote to me privately to say thank you. I asked her to add to the string that she had seen what I'd found, and she did, so that one was nicely closed. When they are left open, you don't know whether the person who asked for help ever went back to read the replies. But then, I seem to be getting very grouchy in my old age. I get annoyed when people just list what they want without putting please; when they don't make it clear whether they are asking a question or making a statement; when they exhort "you lookers up" to find info for them, that sort of thing; when they give a couple of names, and when you ask for more information give lists of dates and places of birth, other family members etc., which they could have given first time round; or, even worse, when you ask for more information they don't even bother to reply. Phew, I do feel better for that. Shall we ask GC for a complaints board next? Jan.

Jan, I know the couple you mean because I pulled them up on it. The guy kept posting the same question and had deleted the previous questions with the answers. As soon as I pointed out that, he deleted that question with my reply too. I've started saving the threads I answer and 50% of the time there is no response from the originator. Yes, Gwynne, there is one (as you say) a couple of bus rides away, but it just gives a residential address, so I'm not sure how it would work. Trouble is my partner isn't in too good health and I don't like leaving him for too long at the moment, and I imagine that if I went to a place like that the time would run away with me. I hope to make contact with them at some time, but don't know if they will be able to solve my problems. I've almost reached the stage of giving up. Jan.

Hi Jan, Do you live near an LDS centre? My families are from Suffolk and Wales but I live in Warwickshire. I use the LDS Centre in Coventry it's two bus rides away but it's worth it. They have filmed a lot of parish records which you can search at their centres. Hope this helps, Gwynne

I can only do my searches on line Ros, unfortunately. I live in East Sussex, my relations came from Norfolk, Cambridge, Kent and London, and I don't have a car. I've still got back to gt gt grandparents on most lines though, and even further on one. Jan.

I got really excited one day, because a man asked for exactly the same lookups that I'd done a week or so ago for a woman. I mailed both of them to get in touch with one another, only to find that they were partners. I'd spent hours the previous time finding out all sorts about this particular family, exchanging private mails with the person concerned, they were excited and thrilled at all I'd managed to find for them - then just two weeks later, he was asking for the same information. Which is why I do wonder why we bother sometimes (particularly as nobody seems to be able to help me with any of my reincorced concrete walls). Jan
