I couldnt find one of my familys on the 1881 census, but then they appeared in 1891 and 1901. Then on the 1901 census one of the children was born in India in 1881. so thats why I couldnt find them before. I still havnt found out why they were in India. Yours could be anywhere like that. Debbie |

Hi Val Thanks for looking. The marriages you found are the right ones I have the certs for them. I have had someone look up the 1871 census for me and it was when Walter and Elizabeth were married, Ther 2 children were Walter and Elizabeth. Were did the Walter and Mary Ann live that you found? |

It was illegal until sometime in the 1900's when the law was changed. Unusually, they backdated the law to mean that previous marriages between former in-laws became valid. -Kat |

Gillian, where is St George's please - is it London?? Re marrying your wife's sister after her death, I think it was very much frowned upon but also may have been illegal. I'm sure I read about it somewhere. Even so, I believe it was quite common. I am happy to check my 1881 discs if you can clarify the St George's bit. Maz. XX |

On the news the other day was something about the 2001 census and the fact it may have to be redone as in the London area alone some 70,000 people were missed off, if that happened 2 years ago what happened 122 years ago?! |

Sorry if I sounded a little caustic Jan, but I've had long discussions with several different counties records offices about people being 'missed off.' Aparently it happened a lot more than most people realise. It is the same with birth records. Apparently a minister like figure used to go round the parish at specific X monthly intervals and record all the births that had occurred during that time. If the family moved, went to sea, stayed with relations or the like they were easily missed. The same type of thing went for the census. Take Care, -Kat |

Thank you, Kat, I sit corrected. But I still think the chances are greater of a family being mistranscribed than missed off. Jan. |

"As you realise, they must be there, but their name must have been transcribed wrongly" There is *no must* about it. Some people *were* missed off. Mistranscription happend a lot (on the 1891 the CARE family lived next to my BURNS lot and the typed-up results have them listed as all being Burns'. Only on the census page can you see they are actually two families) Yes, lots were mistranscribed, *but* there were still quite a few people who were actually missed off completely. -Kat |

As you realise, they must be there, but their name must have been transcribed wrongly. If I try to find people like that, I try different things like only putting in the first name, date of birth plus or minus 2 or 5 years (depending on how sure you are) and the place where they were born, then trawl through the results until you find one that looks as if it could be your name, but wrongly transcribed. I was trying to find a family Oxspring for someone the other day, part of the family was listed as Oxspung, the rest as Cospring. So a first name date and location search often shows them up. Good luck, Jan. |

I am trying to find the Allen family on the 1881 census. I have been using the LDS on their web site but cant find them at all. I have tried different spellings, 1st names only etc but I just cant find them. What could the reason be? The details that I know are Walter Henry Allen born Islington 1844 Mary Ann Allen born Holborn 1842 Walter born 1868 St Pancras Elizabeth born 1869 ST Georges Hanover Sq Helen 1876 St Georges Alice 1877 St Georges Maude 1879 st Georges The last address in 1871 was 3 Brunswick Yard St Georges In 1891 address was 18 Princes St St Georges Their is also entries for some of the children on the 1901 census. Its the 1881 I cant find them on. Can anyone help please. Also Mary Ann was Walters second wife. his !st was Mary Anns sister Elizabeth who died in 1872 was this a common occurance in those days and was in legal? Gill xxx |
