Marian have sent you an email, but here's the answer for anyone else The date of birth was on the death index. It is the first time I have looked at a death that recent. They put the date of birth on the death cert now don't they? I have no idea when it started being on the index. It was there instead of the age at death. Margaret |

My grandfather was born Albert Edward Percival but was known as Percy all his life. His mother was born Harriet Ann and called herself Lily which was on her death certificate. It caused no end of frustration initially especially as one set of Ggrandp/ts altered their ages on the marriage certificates. Never dismiss anything. Margaret, really curious~ how did you manage to get both date of birth and death, did you look at them seperately? Marion |

It's not just the name it's the age, if it was him it would make him 60ish when my Mother was born, I know it's not impossible but even in the 60's unlikely. I suppose it could have been her Grandfather, whos name was passed down in some manner. What information will I get from the death certificate? Should I infact be looking for the birth of a Percival Whyte ? Any suggestions |

Carla Don't dismiss Percy out of hand just because he was Percival on his marriage cert. People's names changed all of the time. I have a Thomas Henry who was sometimes HenryThomas and a Sydney Francis on his marriage and death cert but was Francis Sydney at birth. Margaret |

Thanks for the checks but he is definitly down on the marriage certificate as Percival Whyte. The marriage of his daughter Desiree Joy Whyte took place in Hendon 03/01/1970 and he was listed as deceased. I have been lead to believe that he was "ill" in April of 1968 when I was born so that is how I came up with the dates. I will start to check prior to 1968 now. Have e-mailed Westminster Council to see if they can do a property check on Desiree's address for 1968 & 9 to see if he was living with her then. But at the moment am just waiting for information to come back from all my enquiries, a most frustrating time! Will check the libraries on the genuki site. I did try phoning hoping to get a different librarian, but this one was just as clueless and didn't even know what microfilm was. Cheers Carla |

Hi again - Margaret is right. If you are at the main library for your area they will have the complete GRO (General Register Office) index on microfiche. This is not split up by areas at all. Parish Records are a different thing entirely. I think the librarian must have got the wrong end of the stick! Have a look at the Genuki website as this tells you what info is held in each library in the country. I would ring first if I were you, just to check that their fiche reader is working, opening hours etc. Good luck. Maz. XX |

Carla I have looked on 1837online from the beginning of 1968 to the end of 1970. The only Percy, no Percivals, was Percy Edwin Whyte, date of birth 6th Oct 1889, died Jun Qtr 1969 code 10d 1163, Liverpool S. Is there any chance that could be him? As for your librarian, she talks a load of rubbish. Try ringing round other libraries in the area or do you have an LDS centre anywhere near you. How far away is Lincoln? The county record office. I still think you would be better off on 1837online. You can try before or after the ones I've done if you think that that Percy isn't yours. Margaret |

Yep, loads of churches everywhere! and only the Parish Records in the Library. I asked how I should look-up a death in London and she said to go there! so I don't think that there was any ambiguity in my question, she did give me a list of web sites that I could try though (not proving to be very helpfull) Will have to wait for my credit card..sorry I mean Husband.. to come home from work to try 1837. |

Carla Have you tried 1837online, its cheaper than travelling. You don't need to go to London. I don't see how Stamford can only have Lincs. The GRO indexes are England and Wales as a whole. Are you sure you asked for the correct thing? Maybe they misunderstood what you were asking for. I was in Stamford a few weeks ago, my 3 x great grandad lived there. I noticed you had lots of churches in a small area! Margaret |

Have been to my local library and they say that they only hold records for Lincolnshire, is there anyone in London that could please look this one up for me? |

The indexes cover the whole of England and Wales - you search by date then surname on microfiches. Maz. XX |

Carla Take a look on 1837 online, you will find it there. It is a pay per view site, or as Maz says look on the microfiche as a library or county record office. Margaret |

If you visit a main library there should be copies of the death registers there so you can check for free. Maz. XX |
