thank you Susie.... Sadly he was dead by the 1891 census as Charlotte is a widow so i cant double check his place of birth.. Is it possible that Joseph was his middle name do you think? Is it possible he could be listed as Joseph on a previous census? Really dont know where to go from here.... Once ty for looking for me. Rebecca. |

I think Crowland is one of those parishes that sits on the county border and is not always in Lincs censuses (check it on a map)It is in Lincs in 1841 but, I think not in 1861. I haven't checked all of 41 (big parish) but, for example, on HO/606/12/6 there's a Speechley family , most of whom were not born in Lincs (that's all that 1841 tells you about place of birth..yes/no to the county): Charles Speechley,25,shoem,no Agnes,30,no William,2,no George,1 day,yes Have you tried eg Northamptonshire for possible parents...or do you know the names of any of his siblings...or did he call his kids Charles or Agnes? John in Aus |

Just when you think you have a good theory....there are other Speechley families in Crowland in 41: South St: Henry Speechley,35 ag lab,yes Mary ,25,yes Titus,25,ag lab,yes Reform St: Theophilus Speechley,30,ag lab,yes Sophia,25,no William,3,yes John,10 months, yes ....and that is only the first 50 pages |

thank you john for all your help..... hoping for that one connetion somewhere that puts it all together... I have found Joseph in 1871 living with Charlotte and his birth place is given as Crowland again.... So ideally if i could find him in 1861 it would be great! once again, many thanks.. Rebecca. |

Hi Rebecca, Afraid i wasnt able to find anything on census for you. Unfortunatley Crowland seems to be in the Peterbro' registration district, so it is not available on microfilm at Grimsby library. I was able to get microfilm numbers for the 1851 census for Speechley in Peterboro' though, they are as follows: 1851 HO107/1747 pge numbers: 781, 812, 820, 821, 824. 1851 HO107/2097 pge numbers: 23, 80, 90,96, 99, 151, 462. Maybe akind soul would be able to look them up for you. Sorry i was'nt able to do more. It seems Crowland is one of those areas that is right on th border of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire and someone has decided that they do'nt belong in Lincolnshire. Could'nt find any indexes for 1861 or 1871 but there is a possibility that someone else was using them, so I'll have a quick look next time I go. Jane |

Hi Rebecca, If you go to rootsweb (.) (com )(remove brackets and spaces) and go on to the message boards for Lincolnshire, you may be able to get someone to do a lookup for you. Have just looked and there was someone who'd asked for a census lookup for Crowland 1841 and 1851. Somebody was kind enough to find her some information. Worth a try. Jane |
