Dont know about cheapest. But cheapest is not always the best. Scanning reproduction on Archive CD Books is fantastic. I have the 1861 Census for a couple of counties and it is perfect. Problem with 1841 Census was scanning of pencil impressions. Some areas impossible to read. Another point to take into consideration is indexing. At the end of the day you pays your money and takes your choice.

hi maggie, i too have been looking around, have a look at S&N, and the loacal history groups sell things. i got a number from the tips board a couple of nights ago [solihull 0121 7852200 -for the lds/mormon org.] but havnt rung it yet. i bought the 1881 cd rom set from them 2 or 3 years ago, and i think i only paid £30 or so pounds, that was before you could access it on the internet, let me know how you go, was there any special one you wanted ? sue.

Hi Linda & Sue, Thanks for the info, I am looking at getting the 1861 for Sussex, although I don't think its out yet but you can pre-order it. Maggie

Another thought. If you are looking at the 1881 Census you cannot go past the Church of the Latter Day Saints (No I am not a member). This was the first census I purchased. It covers the whole country and is indexed by name. For a first time purchase this is the one to go for.

For reproduction quality, although the indexing is a learning curve, I wholeheartedy recommend Archive CD books. I see that Sussex 1861 is due out in March.

I agree with the comments re the quality of the scans from Archive CD Books. I have both 1841 and 1861 Cornwall census from them, and even allowing for pencil writing in 1841, it is exceedingly clear. I have been contacted by a lady from GC who is very disapponted with the quality of her 1841 census from S&N. They apparently have said they will "redo" the disc, whatever that means. Sometimes it's better to pay that little bit more for a better quality item. Both mine have full place and name indexes as well, which is an enormous help, and something to bear in mind. Pauline
