Try as I will, I just cannot find a record of my paternal grandparents' marriage. Perhaps they simply never got round to it. I have found my grandmother, Alice Ann Davison (born 1877 Holt Norfolk), single and in service in London, in the 1901, but my grandfather, Charles Alfred Howe (born 1878 Poplar London), doesn't seem to be there. My father was born in 1905 in South Africa, where grandfather was a train driver. On his birth certificate his mother is shown as Alice Ann Howe, formerly Davison. If anyone can find a record of their marriage for me I would be very grateful for their help. Jan

Hi Jan - looked on VRI - sorry neither of your people on it for the marriages

Thanks for looking, She. I have the feeling that if a marriage of a Charles Alfred Howe IS found, it won't be to Alice Ann Davison. I always thought there was a skeleton in the cupboard, and this might be it. Just a thought - could you see if there is a Charles Alfred Howe, dob 17.3.1878, who married someone else? Max, I don't think he is the right one, I did a group search and found that he was with a brother and parents, all three males Lightermen. Thanks for the suggestion though. Jan

Thank you very much, She, but that's not the one either, I forgot (I always seem to forget something!) to say that his father was Charles. Perhaps she went out to South Africa as a nurse, and they met and married there. I have yet to find a good, easily searchable South African site. Thanks again for your time and trouble, Jan.
