Im trying to find the death(s) of Cecil and Violet Cox, somethime after 1960. They lived in Boston from approx 1928 without taking out citizenship. They only address I have is Ivy Street Boston from the 1930 census. Can anyone help?

Hello Jean Just checked on Ancestry.com - I do not have access to the US records but there is one Violet Cox listed in Massachusetts Deaths from 1970 - 2001. There are 2 Cecil Cox's listed on the same index. You will need to find someone on the record office board to do a look up for you. Good luck Michele

There are two listings in the state of Massachusetts for Cecil Cox in the Social Security Death Index: Cecil Cox Born: September 12, 19o6 Death: March, 1951 Social Security #015-14-0444 Cecil H. Cox Born: November 11, 1901 Died: September 8, 1989 Social Security #022-03-7705 One listing for Violet Cox Violet Cox Born: July 3, 1896 Died: May, 1986 Social Security #010-50-2463 (Issued in Massachusetts) Last known address was: New Hyde Park, Nassau, New York Massachusetts death index, 1970-2001 had the following: Violet Cox Death Place: Boston Certificate #003271 May 3, 1986 I'm not sure, but you may want to check into whether or not citizenship was obtained. I am under the impression, and I could be wrong, that in order to get a social secutity number, one would have to be a citizen. It looks like perhaps, Violet may have had family she was living with in New York, since her social security information indicates her last known address as being in New York. She died though, according to obituary, in Massachusetts. Birth and death records, according to Ancestry, can be obtained online. It would be cheaper by far to send for certificates to the state agencies that they lived/died in. Judy

Forgot to mention, besides birth and death certificates, copies of the original application that Violet and Cecil filled out at the time they registered for their social security numbers, can be obtained throught the social security administration which would reveal further history on them. Judy

Hi there. I'm still a Canadian citizen, and do have a (U.S.) social security number. Perhaps you have to be a U.S. citizen, or have a "green card" in order to obtain a social security number? My father-in-law passed away in California about 17 years ago and his death is not listed anywhere. So, keep that in mind when searching for relatives! Good luck, Lisa.

You don't need to be a citizen to get a social security number. You just need a valid visa. Crista

Lisa & Crista....thanks, I hadn't thought the visa or green card route. Lisa, as for your father in-law, did you try the social security death index? Judy

Hi Judy. I don't remember which site I tried (it was two years ago). We know when he passed away, as my husband visited them often. I actually was trying to find HIS father's death (they shared the same name) and neither my father-in-law nor his father were listed, which I thought was rather strange. So much for my attempt with American research, eh? :~)
