Hi, first of all, write everything down that you know, all the names, link the relationships, all the dates of birth and places of birth that you know, dates of marriages, dates of death, always putting the places. That way starting with yourself, then your parents, grandparents draw a basic tree. when you come to a halt of what you know, come back on the board and tell us and someone will tell you the next step, where to lok etc. Ann Glos

There are a whole load of sites available to you as well as resources at local record offices. The following sites are free to search. www.familysearch.org (This site has the IGI Index and the 1881 census) www(.)freebmd(.)org(.)uk (remove brackets) it is the index to births, marriage and deaths, but is not yet complete. then you have the following pay sites www(.)ancestry(.)co(.)uk (expensive, but has the full 1891 census, currently transcribing the 1871 census and then also has some other records.) www(.)1837online(.)com (the full index to birth, marriages and deaths. www(.)census(.)pro(.)gov(.)uk (the 1891 census, free to search but you have to pay to view the image) www(.)scotlandspeople(.)gov(.)uk (excellent site if you have scottish ancestors) These should get your started!!!!

Hi Sharon. try and put what info you have on your family to good use by using the resource centre. Click under the useful links bar, and this will give you many sites that you can enter what info you already have, so you can research further. There are also a whole host of helpful souls on here that will help you in most look ups. Happy hunting.

I am really new to this and haven't got the first clue where to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I've got some basic facts on my family by talking to relatives, but don't really know where to go from here, except maybe the library! Would be grateful for any assistance
