just looked on Ancestry and all I can find is: Sarah Matta marriage sept quarter 1852 Cornwall ref 5b 198 dont think it can be the one you are looking for because that would mean she married at 10 years old! but no others on there.

Demelza I don't have 1851, but 1841 shows the following HO107/146/5 page 20 Pentewan Port William Matters 26 Ag Lab Jemima 20 William 4 Mary 2 Sarah 8 months Hope that may be of help to you. I have 1861 if you want a look up on that. Pauline

Susanne, I've seen that entry for Sarah Matt on freebmd and its not her...i think she would have been born around 1841 so im thinking she wouldnt have got married until at least about 1857. Thanks anyway. Demelza

Hi Demelza, By 1861, the family surname has changed to Matta, but they are still living in Pentewan. Entry as follows RG9/1548 page 19 William Matta Head 47 Born St Ewe Occupation Tram wagon driver Jemima Wife 44 Born St Austell (same for all the children following) William Son 24 Seaman (MS) Henry Son 17 Ag Lab Stephen Son 16 Tram wagon driver Frederick Son 13 Tram wagon driver Richard Son 10 Joseph Son 7 Scholar Elizabeth Daug 5 Scholar Mary Daug Daug 5 Scholar Martha Jane Daug 3 Maria Daug 1 No sign of Sarah under either spelling anywhere in the census for 1861. Checked Free BMD for both marriage and death, but nothing came up. Hope this is of some help to you. Best wishes Pauline

Pauline, Yes, thankyou, its a massive help. I think this family could be hers!! By 1861 she'd have been about 20, so old enough to marry. The eldest child of hers that I know of was born in 1866 and I know of 3 possible children to date from the 1881 census. I havent come across a family this small yet in those dates and in 1881 she was a widow.......I'm thinking that maybe she had more children born before 1866 but by the time of the 1881 census they had either moved out of the family home with familes of their own of moved away to work. I think youve given me the info I need to finally break the wall Ive been stuck at for ages! Thanks ever so much, its really appreciated. Demelza.

Pauline, Sorry to be a pain but could you possibly do another lookup on the 1861 for me please? Sarah Matta married a Charles Shepheard, (in 1867 a Blacksmith), originally I thought that this would be in Plymouth, Devon. However as shes not on the 1861 census with her family could you possibly check if she was married to Charles already and in Cornwall in 1861? The various spellings Ive come across already for the family are.....Shepheard, Shephard or Sheppard. Isnt it a nightmare how they changed the spellings from one year to another!.....can get very confusing and makes the job of finding them a whole lot harder! Sorry to keep asking you for help and I hope its not too much hassle. Thankyou very much for all your help so far. Demelza

Hi Demelza, Sorry the luck just ran out. No sign anywhere in Cornwall under any spelling variation of Shepherd, and that's using the full name index. Have you tried 1837online to find their wedding? I know it costs, but at least you would be able to get the certificate which would then confirm her father's name, and that of Charles. Another good web site for Cornish research is as follows: www(.)cornish-ancestors(.)co(.)uk - remove brackets. There is loads of info on there including look up's by parish offered, and also an OPC network as well. People there have helped me a lot, so I would give it a try. If I can help on any more census look ups for either year, please let me know. Might be as well to email as I don't always come on here everyday. I also have a complete set of Phillimore Parish records (marriages for Cornwall) which go up to about 1815. Good luck in your searches. Pauline

Hi Debbie, No Thomas Emery at all. Do you know his parents names? I've looked through the name index, and there are a couple of spelling variations. Any other info, let me know and I'll be glad to have another look for you. Regards Pauline

Pauline, Thanks for trying,... without any dates, a place and all the different spellings of surnames they used it would take forever to trawl through 1837. I'll have a think and see what ideas I can come up with on where to go next. Thanks ever so much for helping, youve been a star. Demelza

Debbie, There were no Thomas Emery as children at all. There are a few pages on the index which are illegible, so it might just be there, but I can't really say. Sorry, Pauline

Debbie, As suggested to Demelza, try the Cornish Ancestors website. On the OPC pages, there is a contact for Kenwyn called Carol Hughes. She is very helpful. Migt be worth a try. Good luck. Pauline
