HI Cherie I have been reading about your problem. I too only started with the names of my grandparents parents and didnt have a clue where to look. After hours of searching through the internet search engines and looking at every site it found to do with geanalogy i made a list of the most useful ones. This site being one of them! The people on this site have helped me tremendously and am very grateful to them. Anyway i thought i was going to help you but after searching i think what i have found out is going to confuse you even more! Just out of interest if you havent got Robert Emmingham and Rose Horner's marriage certificate where did you get her name from? I looked up marriages for Robert Emmingham on freebmd and it came up with two one in 1841 and one in 1897. The one in 1897 was in the march quarter in East Retford and the other person listed is a Millicent Rich. No sign of any one called Rose. I checked and East Retford is the registration district for Gringley on the hill. There were no entries for a Rose Horner at all in East Retford. I noticed from the 1901 census decoder that there are a few families listed in Nottinghamshire with the name Emmingham, most of them seem to be born in Lincolnshire and there is another Robert Emmingham age 61 with wife Hannah living in Gringley. I hope i havent confused you too much. I would check that the info you have about your gt gt grandmother's name is correct and go from there. It seems a strange coincidence that there is a marriage of a Robert Emmingham listed in the right area and the right sort of time for it not to be him. Regards Sharon |

Cherie, As before the best way would be to order the birth certificate for Clara birth Dec qtr 1899 Clara Emmingham East Retford 7b 16 Details from Freebmd if you haven't already seen them. Emma. |

Hi cherie The March quarter Marriage 1897 in East Retford that Sharon mentions could be right don't forget not all the marriages on FreeBMD list both partners it it great if they do but remember not ALL of the registers/years have been transcribed yet. If it feels like the right one go for it- it has worked for me several times! JAnet xxx |

The only marriage on the Notts Marriage Index looks like the one above. Robert Emmingham Married Rose North 4th Feb 1897 at Gamston, Retford |

1881 Robert/ Hannah Emmingham with Robert aged 6 at Gringley Also Thomas/Hannah North with Rose aged 3 at Askham Askham is 2 miles from Gamston, Retford, where the above marriage took place 1897. I am pretty sure that this is your couple. Nb There are no Emminghams listed on the 1871 Census for Notts. The only birth recorded is George b 27.2.1879 and christened at Gringley 18.5.1879 and he is the only one of the family born in Notts. |

hi cherie, me again. does seem a coincidence both gmas having same surname, do you think your grandad might have got it wrong, [remember the gravestone story i told you,] ? ask him if the name rose north rings a bell, would add up with the information above. [ knew you would get the bug, isnt it frustrating !!!] sue x |
