I am searching for the sons of my great grandfather William Woodruff on 1901 Census. One of the sons was named George and on the 1901 census I have found a George Woodruff, 22 years old, b KENT DEVON, living in Sheffield, Occupation Carter Coal. My question is where is Kent Devon. My George was born Dover, Kent, is this the same place but mistranscribed or something completely different. He was living in Hougham in 1881. Your help would be appreciated. Margaret

Weird and wonderful are some of the transcriptions on the 1901. I have found some real howlers, and most other people too I think (there was a thread some time back and you would be amazed) I would think you have found you man - Dover Kent seems to be right - go for it!! Jacquo

my guess is that Dover was mis transcribed as Devon. Have you seen the original copy, then you would be able to tell for sure. Jane
