Kerry, my husband's great grandmother's brother committed a crime (1876) and went to prison and I got all the information from the local records office for that area, which in this case was Gloucestershire. I have copies of the court sentencing, including the crime, other people involved and length of sentence. I then contacted the library in that area and gave them all the info I had, especially dates and I was sent a copy of the story which appeared in the local newspaper in 1876. This only cost a few pounds for everything. Well worth a try, it worked for me, took a while, but was worth it. My husband too was very ashamed, but as I told him, he cannot blame himself for things members of his family did, it doesn't make him a bad person. Hope this helps, good luck. M.

I don't suppose you can really blame him. Most people would do the same in this situation.

I'll let you in on the secret. My grandfather was in the navy and came home to find his first wife in bed with another man!!! consequently he was very angry and beat the man to a pulp, as you would, so he was imprisoned for GBH I assume. Not suprisingly he divorced after this incident which is why my earlier thread about divorce records came about!

Kerry I'm sure you wouldn't get anything from the prison authourities, but if you know the year, you could go to a library and look in the archives to find a paper in the area the crime was commited and see if it was reported. By the way don't be ashamed, it wasn't you that commited the crime, and unless you know the circumstances there may have been a reason he did the crime. Just because you have been in prison doesn't make you a bad person. I know there are exceptions to this though. Lynda

Hi can anyone help me please. I'm ashamed to say it but my grandfather served a prison sentance back in 1940's does anyone know how I go about investigating this? It would've been in the Coventry area.
