Been trying, no success so far, to locate George William CRAWLEY aged 13/15 yrs in 1891. Should be with father George and mother Ann(annie) aged approx 38 yrs. They should be in Middlesex somewhere, but cant find them. ha. They may have ties with Essex or Suffolk though. If any kind person can look for me, lots best wishes, Dave in Hants.

I've been looking too but with no luck either. Do you know what job George did? Might be going under a different name than george?

Thanks to Jill, Karen,Jo & Geoff for your replies, much appreciated. The problem with my progress so far is that between 1881 and 1901 there could well have been a name change from Mortimer to Crawley because Georges father, Joseph Mortimer, had died when George was only 5 yrs old. When he joined the army in 1896 he gave his name as George Crawley with a father of the same name (although deceased). I have assumed that Georges mother Ann or Annie then "lived with" a Crawley, and her young son assumed that name. (There is no record of a marriage between Mortimer and Crawley). Wow! what a mess. Thats what makes it so interesting and frustrating I suppose. Cheers all, Dave in Hants

Have you looked for William Crawley? As George William's father was also George, its quite possible the son was called William to avoid confusion, and might have put that on the census. Jan
